Additional Armor is handled wierd in the mechlab to say the least.
The additional 1-2 armor points per mech component geting added only at a specific
stage of added armor points. For example the armor jumps on my ATLAS-DDC from
100-102 consuming only 1 point of added armor. On the rear it isnt possible at all to add
the extra armor point cause it wont make the 2 points jump regardless how far i raise/decrease the armor points.
On other variants the threshold is reached at some point, at front and rear armor and i can
add the extra armor point(s) by raising/decreasing their ammount far enough.
Dont know if it becomes clear what i mean.
To get to the point,
it shoud be that way that the additional armor points are free to add ONTOP of all the
armor you have, regardless of beeing added as frontal/rear armor.
Not somewhere inbetween, like in the present random and complete suboptimal way.
Its impressive how PGI turns easy things into uneccessary complicated wierdness.

It will be some sort of "rounding" issue.
And it might even be that you see "17" and the value used is actually "17.4"

Uh if you want those 2 pts to be added to the back then simply reduce 2 from the front of the normal points you would have. Then when you add the skill nodes your front side comes back up to where you had it before but your backside now has additional armor...

It's just the rounding.
You should also note that when it does jump like that, that the bonus points have also increased.
Eg:
If you had 10 points of armour and then allocate 10% armour increase from the skill nodes, you armour will increase to 11 and you should see a +1 at the top of that armour section.
If you keep allocating more armour to that section, it will jump at some point. Ie: once you allocate 15 points it might give you +2 so you have a total of 17.
