So after a years long absence, I like what PGI has done with the maps.
Being able to vote for a map and game type is awesome.
What is not, is being out voted in favor of a cold/sniping map 99% of the time.
On top of that most of the selected maps involve little or no strategy other than sniping at the other team from cover or dishing out LRMS till their line breaks. Both fine tactics but its really repetitive really fast.
Lastly nothing is worse than selecting your favorite brawling mech, only to be out voted and stuck on a sniping map.
I know how we can fix this somewhat; borrow the drop deck from faction play and modify it slightly so that if your selected mech is still in a game, you auto switch to your second or third choice. It's not ideal but it'd work alot better. I think the idea of selecting the map first, and then the mech, makes way way way more sense than the way it's currently set up and is probably how actual mechwarriors from the lore would probably go about it.
What do you think PGI? Worth investigating?
Your view of the existing MAPs imho shows you do not really know/understand them .
Please do not get me wrong, I am perfectly aware that many Games on several Maps almost ALWAYS are played in the exact same way in SP QP Queue. But that is not a flaw in Map Design...its a flaw of human nature . And a sign of the sadly clueless and boring mindset of too many MW:O players.
In my point of view, every single MAP in MW:O offers enough for a variety of Strategies to be employed . There can be "brawling" Games on "Sniper" or "LRM" Maps, and all the other ways round . But tbh., already those simple classifictions dont do the Maps any justice .
QP Group Queue not rarley has the Quality to show what is really possible on the Maps . How 2, 3 smartly played 'Mechs can herd an entire Team into a KillBox, where they promptly get shot at from all sides by 'Mechs suddenly appearing on all the Ridges around them . Unless the other Team knows the counter. How 1,2 'Mechs can close down 1 or 2 very important moving Lanes, making it impossible for the enemy team to close in without having to cross open Terrain . Unless the enemy Team knows the counter . Etc .
Actually, possible tactics can also be seen in SP QP Queue, in Matches where you think one Team sked hard and was wiped for no apparent reason . That is often because the other Team magically has employed a really nifty Strategy, without knowing about it, or having communicated about it . Or it was just a really bad Matchup XD .
All of that may sound weird to you, but I think its true .
