to throw a suggestion out there.

Current suggestion as I understand it:

pulse lasers literally throw out one pulse of laser damage. A PPFLD with hitscan. and can do that constantly without a cooldown or a very short cool down.

So mechanically you press and hold the fire button for a constant stream like an AC 2.

How about:

Switch the cooldown to a charge (like the gauss only lots shorter) mechanic. NOTE I am MUCH MUCH shorter than the gauss.

You still press and hold but your first shot doesn't happen instantly you have to press and hold for a fraction of a second. You continue to hold the next shot starts to charge immediately.

of course damage and balance has to be reworked.

NB I am not advocating this but I think it is an interesting thought

I think pulse lasers should work like lasers in tie fighter

they should have an energy bank. and be able to fire as long as their energy bank has energy.

the energy bank would slowly recharge but wouldnt recharge fast enough to sustain fire. similar but also kindve opposite to the jam bar mechanic theyre adding for the RAC5...

that would allow pulse lasers to do high dps in short bursts. IMO pulse lasers should be burst damage weapons.

why you ask? because that would allow them to do better damage than if they were a sustained fire weapon. And lets be honest, sustained fire weapons arnt very good in MWO. pulse lasers need to HURT when you hit someone with them.

I mean if I were to make a change, the pulse lasers would still fire in pulses.

Laser - held dps
Pulse - as now
X Pulse - as per the lore, can "ultra fire" at the cost of extra heat.

That isn't per the lore. Per the lore, X-pulse are simply pulse lasers with the range of standard lasers, trading some extra heat for that range. Like all pulse lasers, their value is in their accuracy modifiers.

its not erroneous since a sustained damage weapon typically has the characteristic of much higher dps. hence making it a dps weapon.

Every Gun in the game except tag lasers and narc are dps weapons. just some have a high dps some have a low dps.

Yes. But only as part of a rebalance of energy weapons.

Making pulse weapons say fire 3-4 times as often as they currently do with 1/3 - 1/4 of the heat and damage creates a greater range of durations for the rest of the lasers to be balanced over.

IS lasers could move into the space vacated by IS pulse weapons and clan lasers similarly into the clan pulse durations (though the exact values would need to be tweaked).

Something like this really needs to happen so clan heavy lasers when introduced don't just end up with just insane durations.

So you get lasers fulfilling the roles that pulse weapon now have but with better range for IS etc... Pulse weapons end up being ammo-less dps weapons that aren't just better lasers...

The overall range balance issue could be helped by making non-ER weapons have a max range +100% of effective range and ER weapons +50% max range. It could been done with only clan weapons with a +50% max range for "balance". Though if only clan some IS range quirks may need to be looked at so this change doesn't just switch around this issues with IS having the range advantage.

Are you just being thick on purpose? Yes, everything has DPS, but the fact some weapons have higher DPS despite being similar ranges is the point, that's why some weapons are more "DPS oriented" than others. Those same high DPS weapons tend to have lower per shot damage than the low DPS weapons.

They're described as firing faster than pulse lasers.

That is extremely nebulous. That could mean that the pulses are shorter and closer together or that it has a shorter cool-down. That isn't the same thing as Ultra-firing, which is firing during cool-down (or twice per turn if TT).
