It's pretty crazy but think about it. Since we no longer have to rely on the system of a mech having to have a minimum of 3 variants to make it in game, PGI can add some interesting outlier mechs that were a one off or had only 2 variants.

Super Griffin is not the greatest example but none the less. There are quite a few more.

True...but, we're still waiting for them to even break away from the 3-variant mech pack sales model. Other than the Civil War mech packs coming out in July, which feature a minimum of 3 variants per package, they've only planned Hero mechs for existing Clan and IS mechs for individual sales at this point.

Then make some hero mechs....

Or it could be similar to the hero pricing system, or scale depending
At any rate have a similar chassis available for c-bills.

PGI has shown that it does have the ability to adjust it's pricing model, somewhat appropriately depending on the situation.

And here I thought I had an interesting topic...
only to see people lighting up the forum with Skill Tree talk like it launched yesterday.

I don't think the "3 canon variants" issue has really been a problem for a while now. PGI just made up variants as needed.

That was another factor I wanted to point out, as we've seen it become more "acceptable" with PGI mad variants. Mind you, I don't mean to imply that the canon-variants and PGI customs are one and the same, in terms of concept.

Don't think it opened up anything.

It was quite within their rights to make any mech variant they wished to, the roughneck proved that without doubt, they just chose not to.

lol true.

This is just to put forth the concept that it can be done, nothing else. I'm stating that with the New Skill Tree system in place, and no longer needing 3 variants of a single chassis, in order to function properly (ie not suck), it's now possible/feasible to bring in FULLY CANNON MECHS that have only 1 or 2 variants historically.

So this is going to sound weird...but I think I'm still going to buy the mechpacks with multiple variants.
With the new tech coming out, you're no longer stuck with cook cutter functional builds.

Even with current tech, finding out how to equip your mechs functionally is fun. For a long time I couldn't figure out how to equip 3-4 of my roughnecks...then eureka!! And i wouldnt' have had that experience had I not happed to grab multiple variants...and heres the thing...

One of the worst variants with mostly low mounted ballistics, is turning out to be one of the strongest performers in the group. Had I simply made that purchase based on hardpoints, I would have never picked out that mech...and I would have been wrong!

If they continue with 3 variant mech packs, then the hardpoints would need to be significantly different...no more multiple Stalkers that vary only by 1 energy hardpoint, for example. It would be better if they had one variant focused primary on ballistics, one primarily on missiles, and one primarily on energy weapons...not boating that weapon type necessarily, just having more hardpoints of those types than the others in each variant in order to give us a reason to want to buy more than one variant.
