I've seen videos posted of an external angle of a mech without the cockpit or reticle showing.
How is this done?
I know it can't be in game, in the testing grounds would be fine.
Screen shots would even be good.
any ideas welcome.

Its called third person cam in settings. You assign a key and a little probe pops out the back of your mech to says, "Over here!", while giving you a larger look around the battlefield. The no recticel is just the F11 key removing the hud.

It sort of can be done in game. You need a private lobby or small group. Have one mech be the camera by turning off the hud which use to be shift + f11. Or have them zoom in max without using adv zoom. Some mechs work better as the chase camera due to their cockpit view and/or height. Hbk,Catapult, and aws are ok mechs for it. there's also spectator tools for private lobby but I haven't ever used it. For the private lobby you'll need one person as team blue and one for red as leader. Both leaders will need mc for starting the private lobby but any one they invite gets in free as long as there is room.

Alternate method is two man group with some one playing the chase camera but then you'll have to deal with all the group play problems. PGI is pretty much no-go as far as tools for the users to make our own mechma or mod-ing of any kind.

If you're very 3d savy you can extract the game mechs into blender/maya using a long complex process outlined in one of the fan creation threads.

Are you talking about a 3rd person view, or a completely independent free camera?

3PV can be done in game - that's the F3 command using the default key map.

And free camera is done via spectator mode in a private lobby. You'll need 3 people, one for each team and one for the spectator position.

I was talking about the free camera as mentioned above.
I thought it was some thing like spectator mode, just never done it.
You've answered my questions, and I appreciate the help.
Thanks!
