Interesting that the League are replacing lost recon mechs with a 40-ton gunboat. Don't they have any light mech factories left? (Apart from Unseen ones. :o )

I think i would prefer the strider to the Cicada, the speed is good but with nothing to really hit back with

Can't help but smile at the little thing. So quickly overlooked by others on the battlefield and shrugged of as not worth the attention!

The Strider is not available. It was created AFTER the clan invasion. It's an Omnimech version of the Cicada, but here are no omnimechs yet, and as they were created by the Draconis Combine who were oin the midst of being invaded by a technologically supperior foe, they certainly wouldn't have been selling them to anyone in the FWL for a while. In fact the FWL because the weapons manufacturer of the IS during the invasion, tremendously improving it's manufacturing and economy.

The size of the mech simply doesn't matter, it's the role it plays. The Cicada is hardly a gunboat, it's a scout, maybe it's heavier than most scouts, but the speed is equivalent.

Ah the 3M, one of the first to use lostech. It mounts an XL engine to keep the 129 kph top speed but with half the weight, giving it space for an Ultra AC/5 and a small pulse to the two medium lasers that come with it, and it also has double heatsinks to stay cooler. Unfortunately, it still only mounts 4 tons of armor, a solid hit from most weapons will strip away most or all the armor in any location, and two good hits from heavier weapons can down it fast.

The FWL actually has a surprising lack of recon 'mechs available at this point. As far as light 'mechs go, they're big in production of the 20 tonners (Locust, Wasp, Stinger) and don't have much access to many formidable locally-produced recon designs. The Cicada happens to be one of the few.

Andurien War of Secession

Following the FWL Civil War, the Duchy of Andurien, in alliance with the Magistracy of Canopus, seceded from the Free Worlds League and proceeded to attack the "weakened" Capellan Confederation. Following several massive defeats, the war was reversed by a remarkable display of the will to survive, and the Capellans retook most of their fallen worlds. After this reversal, the Canopians pulled out and with the war the Duchy was fighting against the Free Worlds League taxing Duchy forces to their limit, the Confederation used their Warrior Houses to return the border to pre-war lines.
The Free Worlds League underwent many changes as Captain-General Janos Marik and his heir Duggan were assassinated by their cousin Duncan Marik. Duncan prosecuted the war to reclaim Andurien somewhat successfully, but he alienated many members of Parliament in doing so. The dissatisfaction was manifested when Janos' son Thomas (who was presumed dead in the same blast that killed his father) reappeared and many MPs wanted to replace Duncan with him. Duncan died in an assault on a fortified Andurien position, which cleared the way for Thomas to take over. He used the shock of his reappearance and his relative popularity to get many laws passed that centralized power in the Captain-General in a way that it never had been before. Thomas was soon able to return the rebellious Duchy to League authority, though it would be decades before he allowed them to regain any autonomous authority.

Put a smaller engine in the Cicada and it's a Strider. They look the same, and engine swaps are probably doable in the Mech-Lab. :)

Whilt the lack of recon mechs is troubleing news for the FWL im wondering though why there letting slip that they have a very bad lach of them. would int that be a weakness that could be used against them if the enemy knew that?

Wonder how these new trials will fair out for them for the replacement model
