You do not, but at least listen, it helps. You are expected to be a teammate at least in CW. Quickplay groups still tend to devolve into everyone doing their own thing, but your opposition may well work together.

I believe communication go hand in hand with teamwork. Win or loss your chances of winning go up considerably with target calling, moving as a group. Im not the best player or anything but i do work well with others. Often times i take initiative target calling and drop commandering. Sometimes it doesnt work, fighting a really good team and such. Honestly its important.

Good habbit to get into when target calling is call the target chassis as well as the designation. Focus firing will win your more battles.

It isn't necessary.

You can use the command wheel to call targets, request help, etc.

It's the same expectations as quickplay, but with people putting more into it all. More skill, more teamwork, more seriousness.

Hailz It's my first day:

If you want to improve your game, comms are essential. Even if you aren't comfortable talking, get a set of headphones and listen. Imagine yourself in a squad and you are the only one who can't communicate. They spot something and communicate to each other what it is, but you got no clue because they aren't using command wheel, hopefully in the heat of battle they will remember you have no voip. Which is better? A non-specific request for "help" or your on voip listening and hear " Target alpha, marauder, d4' 800 meters, help pls?" Just a thought.

Well, I don't personally have any problems with VOIP, but my computer doesn't seem to like it at all, won't even pick them up during matches. My OS has gotten pretty ratty and needs to be upgraded, but until I get to that, it seems unlikely I'll get it working. I think its b/c one of more of those Windows packages wont install right, MS framework or something similar. Even tried that 3rd party program and that didn't help.

I would really really really recommend you try to get it working. Command wheel and text chat are nice, but you really want to be able to hear a teammate who tells you "Dude in the Dire, there's a Cheetah trying to sneak up on you!"

Since command weel and the "take company/lance command" button seems to draw mainly the ADHD people and often are used the wrong way or by ppl in a fit of "safe me I'm more important than the team" those two features seem to have minor significance.

Less unnerving and missused is the implemented voice com. But there are still as many ppl ranting and salting their path through the game as ppl taking responsibility and calling targets.

So yea. Your best option is to get a fixed group and on external voicecoms like Teamspeak, Discord or other stuff.

Venture down to the recruitment forums and get hooked up with some unit.

Being able to verbally communicate targets and your actions is more efficient that typing so, yes, it does make a difference.
However the command wheel is a nice feature and the battlegrid, though seldom used, does have some additional options.
Then there is the text chat options.

Another aspect of using VOIP is you do start to meet other players and build up associations that may lead to getting invited into more groups or a unit.

While I feel the command wheel is pretty useless because I try to be on comms all the time, I do really enjoy using the enemy spotted. Until PGI reduces the time on it, the enemy still shows up on the minimap and you can watch his movements, which is phenomenal.

Having said that, speaking on comms is not essential, but listening is. However, speaking on comms will increase your enjoyment because the teams that do better consistently are consistently on comms. The more players talking and listening, the better off the match will go for you.
