So yeah. I was just taking my Archer out for a spin. I've got 5 LRM5s and 4 SRM4s on the thing. I like it, it's a pretty sweet ride. I also have AMS. We drop on HPG, and the enemy team is LRM heavy. They get a lock on me somehow and just start raining. Now remember, I have an AMS on my Archer. I also happen to have a triple AMS Kit Fox standing next to me. Not a single missile is making it through the AMS screen. But they just keep firing. For several minutes I sat there and watched the missiles explode in the sky above me and not once did they realize that they were just wasting ammo and should probably stop firing. I asked them in all chat as the fireworks were going if they were really that braindead and explained to them what I was seeing. But they still. Kept. Firing. Eventually the fight moved to the basement and my SRMs saw some serious service, but not once did I get hit by any of the what must have been thousands of LRMs that were fired at me. Seriously. If the majority of LRM pilots are really that dumb that they cannot realize they are losing their entire volleys to AMS and should maybe switch targets, no wonder people groan and roll their eyes when they see LRMs on their team. Good lord.

You mean you wonder why people get upset when anyone using any weapon system doesn't use them correctly?

I don't understand the point of this one and only LRM-use thread.

Mostly I'm just making a post because I was aghast by what I saw. Had I been firing those LRMs and wasn't getting a crosshair blink when my missiles should have connected I'd have held fire and switched targets to a target that wasn't protected by such a heavy AMS screen. If I saw my missiles getting shot down I'd have switched targets and even if I couldn't see it happening when I didn't get a hit I would have assumed the target was behind cover and switched targets anyway. I guess I'm confused. Did these people actually think they were dealing damage? I mean, they must have because they kept doing it, right?

The real problem is that switching targets is not always possible but you can stop volley firing and go to barrage firing to overwhelm the AMS. That is what I yell at people about... pissing a stream of 5s or even 10s into too much AMS screen is pointless but if they start dumping 30-40-60 missile salvos then they can still smash through. So once again we have identified that it is Operator Error not Mechanical Failure, LRMs just have a much more visible failure then PPFLD or Laservomit.

This, right here, is precisely why so many players hate LRMs, and LRM boats.

It encourages a play style that is completely polar opposite of what is actually productive in this game, and most of them cannot see their weapons hit. Not to mention, many of them just spam LRMs into various obstructions continually with no productive weapon fire.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that many of them do not realize the reticule contains a damage dealt indicator...likely because they almost never see it anyway.

The thing is that there are some things that you are forgetting:

1) Not everyone in a match is at the same tier as yourself, so there are some relatively new players dropping with you. In other words, they aren't dumb, they are just inexperienced.

2) While they may have been wasting ammo on you, they were also requiring you and the Kit Fox to use up a LOT of AMS ammo. More AMS ammo gets used than lrm ammo in a scenario like that.

3) More than likely the LRM rain pinned down your group, or at least some members of your group.

4) There is a psychological effect to getting lurmed, even if they never hit.

Not dealing damage with LRMs is better than not dealing damage with something else somehow? Posted Image

Iron Domes typically bring 4x the ammo your average LRM boat brings...so they likely barely made a dent.

If you mean pinned down by laughter while they watched the futility of the assault...sure. Otherwise, what was there to be afraid of? They were more likely to take friendly fire from AMS if that is even still possible.

Yes, amusement of the other pilots is a compelling argument for the use of LRMs. Posted Image

Still better effort than players who fire their Small Pulse at targets over 300 meters away. :D

Arguably the same effort...honestly. I try to inform those players they need to get closer in a friendly manner.

Before your edit it was obvious you do not know how to play missiles.

After your edit I came away with the same impression.

BTW, since people like to bring up match scores...in season 11 my matchscore average was 100 points higher than yours when I used missiles. Proving that tier is a XP bar and some people have the wrong opinion of what helps a team.

Gave an opinion on missiles.

If your team has over 4000 missiles, 1000 missiles really does not mean much. I have been on teams where we rotated our launches to eventually break the "iron dome" and then rained hell to a victory.

What does that prove? That communication and teamwork >>>> than whatever weapon system a team brings to a table.

Just death spectate some of the LRM boats on your team from time to time. You'll understand. And it's honestly not (just) about whether LRMs are a good weapon system or not. Not having to aim with them and allowing you to stick to (falsely perceived) safety seems to make a certain type of player favour LRMs.

My average results dropped a fair bit whenever I moved up to higher tiers. I was at the very end of T5 when I started (probably because my account was made when the game was made in open beta or something, so I never got seeded to a higher tier) and back there, I was getting 5+ kills and 1,000+ damage quite regularly. Both my KDR and average damage dropped massively once I had to compete with more experienced opponents.

Point is, farming inexperienced opponents for higher matchscores doesn't make us better players than someone getting a lower matchscore against better opponents.

I stayed in the top 50 using my main and alt accounts using nothing but AWS-8R... was not until I finished farming cbills & bought new mechs to Master that I dropped down.

Unfortunately against your point I play against a higher level of competition. Yes, I pound many tier 1's into the dirt with missiles because tier is a measure of how much someone plays, not how good they are.

Your point is what tier 1 people say to themselves to make them feel like they accomplished something. That is why I use new mechleaderboards as my measure. Where everyone starts out at ground zero and their skill determines how they rank against others. Of course I did most of my placing against thousands. These days not so much.

Missile boats rule if you know how to use them. Unfortunately few do and it gives the rest of us a bad name.

I am pretty new to LRM'ing mostly because I am just not found of the generally passive play style required, however there are times when I just want to change things up so recently set up a few (very few) LRM heavy mechs.

That being the case one of the things I have noticed is that incoming LRMs also act amazingly well as suppressive fire even when they aren't hitting anything but buildings and rocks and such. I mean as soon as the LRM Incoming warning starts flashing, mechs are scurrying for cover like cockroaches when you turn the lights on. They forget everything else to run and hide, even exposing their backs to your teams fire. Also as long as they are getting the LRM Incoming warning, they stay hidden which makes it ever so easy for your team to maneuver and advances without getting blown to bits while trying to do it.

So I am about an noobish as you can get with LRMs but many times I will continue to send LRMs at the enemy even when I know I can't actually hit anyone, especially if I am in a position to be sure that by doing so, I am keeping the enemy bottled up with their heads down.
