It occurs to me that if the heat scale on the HUD actually gave the heat cap number rather than a percentage it would make things easier.
It would show the effect of additional heat sinks on the cap.
It would show the effect of skills on the cap
It would show the immediate effect of losing a heatsink in battle.
This immediate feed back would be nice.
it would make calculating how many times you can fire something easier as well. As all the heat is given in numbers not percentages.
Also instead of the infinity sign at the side of lasers how about putting the amount of heat the weapon produces (no reason why it can't be on all weapons).
In practical game play terms it would make no difference but I think it would make things easier to understand whilst in game.

Thinking on this some more numbers in the HUD would be useful:
Your current radar range
How long you will hold target after leaving line of sight (assuming no enemy modifiers).
How long you will be held as a target after leaving line of sight (assuming no enemy modifiers).
Current dissipation rate in heat per second (current number of heat sinks).
