Sounds like a secondary hard drive got disconnected or failed for some reason.
As an avid user of 5+ hard drives, I can tell you it's a royal pain. Hopefully you know which one was being accessed when that happened.
Actually, this sounds like some hardware, such as a joystick but far more crucial, was dislodged. Potentially a VR headset as that can cause fatal game crashes. So what were you using? Need specifics.

It only happens while playing MWO. Maybe never during a game, but other times.
It's happening too often now I dread going back to my PC repair guy. My GTX 1070 card will never leave there....

Your graphics card drivers crashed and reset. Windows can resume from it, but games will crash.
Why it happens? Some problem with the card, or sometimes bad drivers. Try having vsync on. Underclocking spesially memory can help.

Come to think of it, my Logitech G13 gamepad has been making "the sound" that it makes when it starts up. Like it is being reset on it's on. One never happens with the other but it is happening.
Logitech also replaced my G402 Mouse and I need to set up the new one.
From what I've read online, the ideas are to delete and do a clean install of everything (which is always the option, lol). To the point of using programs to make sure the drivers are totally cleaned out.

Try replicating the situation and keep your eye and ear out for signs.
