Now that PTS is over and alot of heated discussions, certain limits in game mechanics became obvious.

ATMs feel bad. I know ammo switching is almost impossible with the way mwo setup its weapons.
However instead of thinking about ammo switching why not just use alternate fire modes. There is already a toggle system ingame, ECM disrupt/counter and AMS on/off.

Would it be too difficult to ask for alternate fire modes on LBX and ATM weapons?
I mean if you look at how AMS are setup, the main concern is that players would have to change modes in the fire groups manually but I would take that over what we have right now.

This would also allow for an easy fix for ATMs. Shortrange mode missiles fire similar to the isMRM and longrange mode like they behave now (obviously remove the short range 3 damage in this mode). That would give ATMs the unique feeling they deserve.

Apparently, the answer is "yes, it's too hard".

There's a lot of lostech coding in MWO, and I don't think they're able to untangle it.

Ammo switching/fire modes is one of the things I really hope that will make it into the game. LBX has always been promised to get its ability for 2 modes and now ATMs. clanACs were always a temporary solution. I hope this doesnt turn into a broken promise.

The amount of promises was colossal, the amount of promises come true is negligible. The estimated chance of alt firing mode is ~0.0%.

Probably because people stopped asking for it and just settled with what we have. Right now is a good time to ask for it again.

Nothing from what people have been asking ever made it into the game. Unless it was an all-out rage about stuff like minimapocalypse etc. And even then the changes that caused said rage were only slightly un-fubared at best. Very small % of player population actually cares about things like interchangable LBX, and since small % of population is irrelevant in terms of income, so are the things that that small % is asking for in eyes of the fishies.

Its usually lore people that care but they kinda got lulled into a state of passiveness and sticking to what we have right now.

No, most of them just left about 3-4 years ago.

Ammo switching/alternate fire mode might make them come back.

Actually, it's more like "if you break enough promises, people leave".

We could start on that list with third-person view and go down a very, very, very long time.

There are several people on hiatus keeping an eye on this game looking a for a reason to come back ammo switching might be one reason to.

If you actually need a private jet, yay free t-shirt.

AS much as I enjoy those metahpors of yours I think to keep things closer to ammo switching/alternate fire modes. Its nice of you bumping the thread up though. I hope pther will see and chime in here.

Pgi tried when clans released after ammo switching had been on the back burner for a while. Their answer was the guy working on it had left and they couldn't figure it out because of legacy coding so sorry no ammo switching.

Thats why I said alternate fire. From what I understand ammo doesnt have stats, only the weapon has stats and draws ammo.
Ultimately that means no ammo switching. However looking how certain equipment has dual stats, refering to ECM counter/disrupt mode or simply switching AMS on/off, it theoratically should be possible to have weapons with 2 different stas, a default and alternate mode.
Also these alternate fire modes especially with the time skip will allow more weapon options for all.
having special missile launcher that have standard/inferno or LRM with standard/swarm missile types would give us a good amount of new weapon types. Also missiles could be reworked to work like they are supposed to work. Seperating into standard/NARC or standard/TAG, giving each launcher type its own unique characteristics.

That was only missile weapons. With the time skip ballistics would give us access to standard/AP for having a ballistics weapon that can crit through armor, standard/precision a ballistic weapon that follows the reticule to some extend and more. Caseless ammo doesnt need ammo switching.
To keep things balanced these special autocannons had some kind of drawback compared to their lore counterparts. AP for example only does half damage but it goes directly to internals, so once armor is gone you use standard but if you want to snipe a component use AP to destroy a gauss for example. Also reducing ammo count on special autocannons if there is a need to (except caseless of course).

As we can see alternate fire/ammo is in the interest of PGI of getting developed. Definitely a reason for players to return.
