I'm not a new player, but my nephew wants to play MWO.
How do I set up 1V1, and can we use VOIP so I can show him what's what?
Thanks.

Unfortunately the built in MWO VOIP is only for team chat.
To get VOIP between people on diferant teams you need an out of game VOIP solution, I frequently use Teamspeek but others use, Discord, Mumble and even Skype, you can find detailed instructions on how to set any of them up with a quick web search.
To setup a private match first create a private lobby, which is an option on the group screen, the 3 head and shoulders siluettes along the bottom right of center.
Then you will find yourself on 1 team, the other team will be empty, invite your nephew, you can send him a freind request then invite from your freinds list or you can have him join LFG and find him in there.
Once you have a player on each team there are a list of options down the left side, make sure "full teams" is set to "no" or it will not let you launch, other than that select whatever options you want.
Private matches with less than 24 players, and many of the options used to require 1 player on each team to have Premium Time, fortunately that requirement was removed last patch.

Text can work just fine, given a slower pace training session. Teamspeak or skype calls work wonders, too.

I guess we'll Skype or Facebook voice chat.

There's also the Comstar Team Speak channel that is open for all. Log in and grab a "dropship". My buddy and I do it all the time. TS is pretty easy to setup and use and free to download too.

Download discord and create your own server. 100 percent free and kicks the crap out of team speak
