Why would i pack 6 mediums on clan mech, theyre just 7.5dmg, if i dropped down to ermeds i would lose small worth of damage but get extra lpl.

but oh yeah, pulses have advantages over mediums.

Yeah, but Heavy Lasers are also more tonnage efficient than ER Lasers.

And the only Heavy Laser that has significantly worse damage/heat and heat/second than the comparable ER Laser; it is the only Heavy Laser that actually requires more heat sinks than ER Lasers.


Eg, look at the 2x Large Pulse + ECM + 3 extra heatsinks Shadow Cat.
That is 24 alpha, 5.60 DPS, 4.66 HPS at 1.20 damage/heat with 2.45 heat/second heat dissipation, resulting in a heat efficiency of 52.55% and 2.94 sustained DPS.

If the Shadow Cat trades the Large Pulses for a pair of Heavy Larges and 4 more heatsinks (for 7 total extra heatsinks), it ends up with 36 alpha, 4.94 DPS, 4.66 HPS at 1.06 damage/heat with 3.05 heat/second heat dissipation, resulting in a heat efficiency of 65.49% and 3.23 sustained DPS.

So while the Shadow Cat loses maximum DPS, it is cooler running with Heavy Large Lasers, with bigger alpha damage and better sustained DPS.


For mechs that would be swapping ER Smalls or ER Mediums for Heavy Smalls or Heavy Mediums, they don't need to fit more heatsinks.

Eg, take the Ice Ferret; instead of 5x ER Meds, for 35 alpha, 7.00 DPS, 6.3 HPS at 1.11 damage/heat, it could run 5x Heavy Mediums for 50 alpha, 7.75 DPS, 6.2 HPS at 1.25 damage/heat.
...although I think Heavy Meds have ghost heat limit of 4, so it might be better off dropping a single Heavy Med for a heatsink; it would then end up at 40 alpha, 6.2 DPS, 4.96 HPS (which would be reduced by 0.15 for 4.81 HPS due to the extra heatsink).

Either way, the Ice Ferret ends up with better alpha damage while running cooler; it just sacrifices range, beam duration and rate of fire to achieve that.
