It's a fun ATM/LRM skirmisher-I play the Prime like a tiny Catapult with 2 ATM6 and 2 HLL. I may try ATM9 and HML but I like the large laser range. Lord, it's hot. But it works at mid range and people tend to lose it in terrain-it isn't scary so you get ignored. And people hate HLLs almost as much as they hate ballistics-with a clear line of sight and 500m distance it is great at suppressive fire, but it is not a brawler at all. Move, and keep moving, the 81kph is Summoner speed and you're armored and armed like a Shadowcat so you are fragile.

My favorite mech right now. I freaking love this thing.

COU-PRIME

It makes for a fantastic 2nd line skirmisher. Hide out among your assaults, let them be your meat shields, position in a good spot and spam ATMs while being largely ignored while the enemy focuses on your assaults. SPLs offer some self-defense.

Currently, it's got my best average damage/ton ratio, best kill/death ratio and best win/loss ratio. I love this 'mech.

Liking the cougar myself. Good mix of omnipods so you only really need two variants. The d for the uac -25% jam chance quirk and the ba for the shoulder mount projectiles. The d I have kitted out with a single uac20 and hml which is killer once everyone is damaged and the ba is fit with 2 uac5 with the excellent shoulder mounts which sit above the cockpit so you only have to expose a sliver when you let loose a flurry of shots. Both have plenty of ammo and haven't run out yet.

Ok after some more play and maxing out the skill tree settled on this fit. Two max bonused uac2 for ripple fire spam and four heavy medium lasers for the finisher or when the uac jam up. Last game was 3 kills 9 assists and 726 damage. Posted Image

Ooo, I like it. I'd probably go for ERMLs, myself, but I'm gonna have to give that a try some time (always looking for a good use for those BA pods- tried UAC5s but the UACs by themselves just felt too anemic). I've taken my two favorites for a spin again recently, and they still hold their own. People like to hate on the Cougar, but I think they're giving it less credit than it deserves. Just needs the right mindset, is all.

I tried the er meds but its 10 points less alpha for arguably much more range and the heat while on paper is less it seems to have about the same amount of alphas as the heavy mediums before maxing out the meter. Also with the range bonus from skills they get 308 optimal and 615 max which is more than good enough to keep some distance and still apply good damage. Works a charm late game knocking off smokers and when you run out of ammo which can happen like on my 726 damage game in a target rich environment. Very satisfying to spam those uac2 when you get a good rng streak and they don't jam for a bit. Posted Image

As to the mindset yeah you play it as pure support and hang with the assaults to protect them with your ecm and to punish distracted mechs. If you have some ecm mech already protecting your biguns then the great range of the bonused uac2(943 op, 1846 max, 2300 vel) will allow for some fun sniping action and suppression. A favorite tactic when on frozen city is to get some range and flank then nail mechs as they poke out to brawl with the main body. Minimap awareness is key there though as your 'slow' 81 kph means you have to keep repositioning on the fly to keep from getting too far away and swarmed by their own flanking lights. But generally I find the best games are when you hug your assaults especially dakka annihilators.

I got the Cougar hero the other just to screw around. So far, it's not very good for me. I've had the best results (although still subpar) with the stock loadout, with a bit less HMG ammo and a bit more ATM ammo).

I've decided to call it "Bladder", because it ain't worth piss.

The blood adder is a ranged mech so the atm loadout is good but drop the hmg because it tempts you to get into their range where you will die horribly.

Give the fit I posted above a spin and see if you like that one. Plenty of range to stay out of danger but still close in punch with the hml if trouble finds you instead.

I have been having a lot of fun as just using it as a Heavy Laser platform since they seem to fit it perfectly. The long cooldowns of the heavies combine perfectly with the fact you have to use cover anyways or risk being blown away immediately. Using 2 HLL and 2 HML you get a 56 point alpha on a 35 ton light you just have to make sure you hide in between volleys to cooldown because you can barely get 2 in before overheating.

Modified this a bit since you don't typically get to have much facetime due to the fragile nature and bad hitbox.

COU-PRIME MAX PEWPEW EDITION

Added two heavy mediums and an ecm for walking out and applying a nice 76 alpha sunburn then retreat to cool or poke the heavy larges with the high shoulder mounts.

I love my Cougar! I run it with 2 ATM 9s, 2 ML, and ECM. It's a great 2nd line support role that can rack up the damage and c bills. Posted Image
