(*) I'm letting people decide just what "expensive" actually means. In all probability it will be applicable regardless.

especially since you can turn AMS off already, not doing that is just pure laziness

You mean to tell me that an anti-missile system is smart enough to detect that I'm being targeted by missiles...
...but isn't smart enough to detect whether the missiles have a legitimate path to me?
Pretty dumb if you think about it.

This is really only valid in a tunnel or hemmed in by buildings, with low arc ATMs now AMS is much more likely to shoot into the low hills/rocks around you, turning it off is a little silly when you have plenty of sky to defend but instead its derping a rock.

it doesnt just protect you it protects allies too, so itd have to know if the missiles have a legitimate path to all allied mechs inside your ams range. itd be time consuming to code that.
its quite frankly not worth the devtime when the game has way bigger issues

I turn it off, its not that big of a deal
like I said its just pure laziness

At least in the Civil War patch notes, it stated that AMS velocity is only the speed of the visual bullets you see. Kinda sounds to me like the bullets are just for show.
But yeah, there are also instances where your AMS is going off inside the tunnel on crimson strait because there is missiles flying over it...not quite that smart.

I don't think you quite take my meaning... turning it off in that situation isn't about laziness, its about not wanting to drop defenses around you given that the AMS has a huge field of fire but is choosing to shoot at the dumbest possible target missiles when it really shouldn't be. That is as smart as I'd expect, AMS should fire at hostile missiles it has line of sight to regardless of what they are targeted on or if they will actually hit any mechs.

Disagree. I've SEEN AMS fire emerge from empty ground and go through walls to shoot down missiles. Usually because I'm the one firing the missiles and watching them blow up practically in my face.
Frankly, I think it's pretty broken and immersion breaking and PGI should fix that. But it wouldn't surprise me if they deliberately made AMS work that way.
