Apparently using ATMs makes me a noskill LRM ***. This happened today when I peeled a Mauler open in my Cougar with a couple of Heavy Large Lasers and continuous volleys from my two ATM3s. After I delivered the finishing blow with my lasers he called me out on my use of LRMs that were actually ATMs and in fact were just a pair of the smallest launchers available and then disconnected. Yay, potatoes!

I just thought it was hilarious that he was getting knocked around by what was essentially a single ATM6 and most of my damage was definitely my HLLs and he still whined about LRMs. I thought other people might find it hilarious too so I made a post about it.

Well, this does highlight how ATMs are more or less an LRM reskin rather than a mechanically unique entity. Most of the new tech is basically XML edit rather than truly "new" things (truly new stuff was RACs, Stealth Armor, maybe Rockets).

Oh, on the contrary. They are like streaks done properly this time. Shooting them like lurms is just a waste of damage potential.

When I say that they're like Lurms I mean that they use the same lock-on mechanic and automatic targeting (cannot be aimed).

well streaks have the same and basically have the same range you want to shoot them from, apart from that 120m deadzone

ATMs are not the same as LRMs at all. Not sure I would use them exclusively though as they seem awfully weak vs massed AMS fire (and if you need to be close, you might as well have SRMs). They are also heavy compared to light LRM clan launchers. If the deadzone was removed, I could see them as a viable alternate/supplement to a streak platform at least for scouting mode (benefiting from not being on the same GH table).

They handle AMS better because to achieve optimal damage with them you have to be short-medium range to make them deal any sort of damage.

I love ATMs. They are my favorite weapon system from the civil war update.

Actually from my experience shooting them unguided at a stationary target is a very handy skill to acquire when using these things. It's especially useful against shutdown mechs.

I really, really like ATMs. I have a Stormcrow build (ATM 12, ATM 9, ATM 3, 8 ERSL) that I consistently pull 700+ damage with. Yeah, you have to use brainpower when using them to make sure you get the most bang for your buck (positioning and situational awareness helps a lot), but I have found them a load of fun.

I have a SCAT with an ATM9 and ATM6 and i'm averaging 650 damage per game with atleast 1 or two kills. It's not crazy sick damage. But it's fun as hell to play and it's credit to team.

Okay, so, that's hilarious and all, but why 2 ATM 3's? That's a massive tonnage drop for almost no firepower increase. I actually love ATM's, but ATM 3's specifically seem like a waste to me.
