Depends on the speed of the mech. The faster the mech the bigger the machine-gun.

depends on the speed of the mech and the overall role of the mech

fast striker = hvy machine guns or machine guns depending what my tonnage allows
fast skirmisher/harasser = light machine guns

On all slow to average speed 'mechs, and on all 'mechs with generally mid-range (or longer) weapons, LMG's.

Only on really fast 'mechs and ones completely focused on short range (shorter than SRM) I'd consider regular or heavy.

Unless the entire play style revolves around getting into point-black range, I'm getting more utility out of LMG's.

LMG, as its range goes well with several weapons.

I think I wouldn't equip them at all. I still only remember MGs as useless weapon with too much face time.

I guess in the end it would depend on gameplay experience that I currently lack, and would depend on the mech. Can I actually fight people at the close range of an HMG (or even an LMG)?

Face time is always a weakness, but in present day they can actually deal enough damage to justify that drawback. Even Light MGs can slice out equipment in exposed sections and take out the section in pretty decent time. The fact that many mechs have structure quirks and skills, along with the critical hits rework a while ago, means that MGs are probably better now than they have ever been.

Getting close enough for HMG use is dependent on the mood and coordination of your team, but in usual Puglandia the first few minutes of the game will be spent at long-mid range poking. Later on though it often breaks out into a brawl, giving you your chance to munch on people.

Or if you don't feel like waiting for that you can sorta poke with LMGs.

I use Light on my Ember with 4mpl because the range at which i fight between cover requires that. Being able to start firing at 200meters is pretty nice. Unless you're a hardcore, "hide till someone is ct red and dive_facetank" then id commender Lmg.

yeah but its usually a non-issue by the time you start using machine guns. because either youre engaging isolated targets or the numbers have been thinned out enough that the facetime doesnt matter. machine guns excel as a mid to late game weapon because thats when people's internals are exposed and machine guns can reach their full potential.

I haven't really played around with MGs much but I got to thinking the other day that the role of a MG really is more of a crit seeker, that acts to disable rather than kill. That being the case, even though HMGs and Regular MGs do more damage, I was thinking that using LMGs which have very decent range might be the best and most effective way to go in general.

Depends really.

Long range main weapons, then HMG.

Short range weapons, then LMG.

Medium ranged weapons, then MG.

There is some exceptions to these configs.

But if I really had to pick 1 type of MG then it would be LMG given their almost medium laser range which pairs well with ML's.

I thought at first LMG were gonna be useless, boy was I wrong.

Exactly. You need the speed to get in close with heavy mg's or even "medium" mg's. A reason why I ditched the HMG on my Cougar Blood Adder. Went full on UACS, could go Light MG though, since its a slow light.

Im in agreement here too

I love them all, roles for everyone and finally are machine guns worthwhile to take (along with flamers and even rockets) I do lean a bit more towards the heavies though, more OOMPH!

LMG have the longest range, highest crit multiplier, most ammo and least dmg.
MMG are in the middle of all criteria, jack of all trades.
LMG have the shortest range, lowest crit mp, leat ammo and highest dmg.

HMG only if I'm also running something super short range like micropulse.

But....basically, LMG everytime until PGI nerfs them.

so the LMG has the highest crit multiplier right? meaning more chances of critical hits?

this is my current configuration

I really hope they don't. There's nothing to nerf about them, they are doing their job exactly as intended.

LMG's by far, the damage of the HMG is nice if you can close distance or aren't starved for every ounce of weight you can muster. Realistically though the LMG's give you a LOT more relevance for critting stuff once armor is stripped so they can be super useful to teams who find them selves running with a lot of splatters. Those LRM / SRM / LBX guy are my LMG's best friends... "that's a nice weapon array you had there Hellbringer... would be ashamed if someone NARC'd you and had six HMGs...." Oh i am the worst kind of person...

I think they do it too well and will be nerfed accordingly. Only time and PGI will tell (*read in spooky voice*)
