Well, with the Roughneck not being in the game yet, it's hard to do much beyond theorycrafting how good it will be. From the concept art and the hardpoint lists, it looks like it could be a pretty good hill poking machine. The arms will probably be mid-high mounts, but until we see the actual release model it'll be hard to tell. It also looks like it's going to have a large CT hitbox and poor shielding ability for a humanoid design.

from the looks - the arms are protruding a lot of stuff sticks out waiting to be shot off or to give your ambush away...
that and since it is not a canon tested mech we do not know where the hardpoints are.
assassin is going to have a lot of high mounted hardpoints. if you wanna go package, rifleman, warhammer, archer are good.
or get some centurions/hunchbacks/shadwohawks. well tested designs for IS. for clan stormcrow or nova.

The Roughneck looks potentially interesting, but unclear. For your first pack, I'd go with a known-to-be-good quantity, not a preorder.

The Roughneck looks like it would be a ballistic version of the Marauder. In the shoulders it may be preferential to have a heavy weapon (AC-10/LB-X, Gauss) and rapid fire ballistics in the arms (AC-2s or their ultra variant if they are indeed being released at the same time). If there is room, a good idea may be to fill the ST missile points with SRMs or MRMs. The energy variant may be similar, but with dual PPCs and SPL/MPLs everywhere else. That missile variant seems like it may be a good to fill all the points with Streak-missiles, an AC-2 or AC-5 in the torso, and possibly MGs in the arms.

The Roughnech is closer to the Jagermech than anything else.

The roughneck is nothing like a jagermech, it is essentially a bigger, meaner hunchback/centurion hybrid in looks and partly in layout too.

There seems to be a nice amount of variation in the mech, particularly with the later variants/hero and it has quite clear differences to pretty much any of the other similarly weighted IS heavies when you actually bother to look at its hardpoints layout for example:
-it has low but fully manouverable arms which are not present on the warhammer (torso only) nor the jagermech (up/down only)
-Being 65 tons means it will likely be able to track targets/turn/manouver easier than the warhammer too.
-Looks like it may utilise weapon doors to protect its arms too.
-Its apparantly a non-canon mech build out of an industrial mech so you get to annoy lore people.

When the patch on 21st March hits you won't need 3 mechs anymore to fully master a mech, consider that. If you insist on buying a package and it's not your first you really aren't restricted to the new ones, no?

The best purchases so far were: Warhammer, Marauder IIC, Night Gyr, Kodiak.

I hadn't noticed it before, and I'm not sure why, but a few of the variants have slightly different armor caps between each leg.

Not sure about builds yet. I tried a Splat -1C and I wasn't super impressed. It felt like the Griffin -2N was a better 4SRM6 platform, hands down (better speed, JJ, ECM, torso mounted missile hardpoints).

The -1A energy quirk for a single head energy hardpoint is still making me scratch my head. Is that meant to make a single energy zombie weapon marginally better? Same with the Hero missile quirk, for the single CT missile hardpoint.

The -3A with 4xLPL wasn't bad.

Curious to see how it feels when mastered.

So far the best i can come up with:

Roughneck = http://mwo.smurfy-ne...edab6705b76cac1

1A = http://mwo.smurfy-ne...2d18c661cfb0756

1B = http://mwo.smurfy-ne...c72e84bfe42e58a

1C = http://mwo.smurfy-ne...37e7651caa056fe

Not meta by any stretch, but fun.

No worries. The Reaver is a beast with those UAC5's and high mount MPLs. No coincidence its the hero.... Posted Image

Also, i normally only only have about 10 rear armour on each torso/ST, i just clicked max armour and adjusted the legs to save time.

I've only slightly modified the Hero. I'll see how i go with my build for it before i do anything with it.

The original stated reason for quirks to exist before Russ got behind the helm of balancing... never let a business man balance gameplay.... is to entice you to use under-utilize hardpoints and hardpoints with inferior numbers or placement.

I.E. head mounted missile launchers. Omnipods with one hardpoint instead of 2 or 3. (Originally the 3 hardpoint omnipod would actually have negative quirks and the 2 would have no quirks).

Will be perfectly honest, if I was doing a triple AC/5 build I'd be putting my twin AC/5s on the arms. Just a personal preference instilled by the Muromets.

My builds for this mech so far:
HUNCHNECK Haven't tried this one yet, but I intend for it to feel like the double UAC5 build I ran on Grid Iron a while back
RGH-1B - ROUGHDRAW Used this one once, seemed pretty fun. Felt like what the Quickdraw hero was intended to be
RGH-1C - ANTI-META SANDBLASTER Originally had an AC20 and LRM10 instead, but after getting sick of the AC20 I thought "Eh, why the hell not?" Everything that it shoots spreads everywhere but it was still funny to use

EDIT: It took me long enough, but I've only just realised that my build for the -1A and -1B are practically identical
