It didn't work that way when we had 8v8 previously with better population, less server selection buckets, and no tier separation. If you got 1-2 moderately better players than the other team had it was a stomp every single time.
Not saying that I don't prefer 8v8, but without tight tier (and better skill level system instead of an xp bar) restrictions its simply not going to deliver a better game experience than 12v12. Sync drops definitely used to happen, but more often than not it was just 1 player with a good setup and good skills dominating matches.
