I honestly thought the smoke was just a visual effect for a GPS signaler so other units would know "HEY, EXPLOSIONS COMING HERE!" while the arty just fired at the beacon signal. Not like they can see that smoke from off map, right?

Please explain how this is nonsense, especially because it is entirely within the realm of the possible for the origin of the smoke to be identified in 3D space.

The smoke is coming from a lightweight signalling device. An automated system can lob a few smke canisters in seconds. So try again.

Wrong. The fact that there is universal wait time at all implies there is always a single draw of the card from the pool. Placing multiple canisters breaks that rule. So either you remove wait time or you don't launch multiple canisters. Pick one.

Also there are many mechanics, a few of those unchanged from BT, that disable what would normally be possible in reality. Placing smoke on top of buildings not only defeats the purpose of the smoke (which I've seen no one so far think about it's purpose to begin with), but is not immune to change because it would otherwise be realistically feasible. That's a fallacy.
