Makes me wish e-books were a thing 25 years ago. I still prefer real paper these days, but you can't deny the convenience.

Tell me about it... there is just something about the smell of a book that just can't be beaten... Now when it comes to actually getting to the table with miniatures, Well I am one of those guys that will have a tablet/phone/Laptop handy with everything I could possibly need on it. My back doesn't like lugging around 30-40 pounds of books to go gaming with anymore...

I like the thinking behind this thread. Civil War era mechs are a great idea. However, IS side already has a huge glut of heavy and assault mechs. Furthermore, the Nightstar, at 95 tons, is the same weight as the Hauptman and Sagittaire.

I think you pick some mediums and lights at the weight brackets that need filling out for the IS instead. 20,25,30 or 40 perhaps?

Also, they could release project Phoenix loadouts for the civil war: Shadow Hawk 5D, Griffin 6S, Wolverine 8K, etc etc.

Ok from strictly lore perspective over the FedCom Civil War what mechs were key players in this conflict? Not from what meta chassis or from Mechwarrior 4. This one is by the books.

My top ones I feel we need for this era not in game or announced yet?

-Templar
-Fafnir
-Sagittaire
-Hauptmann

All played key parts during the conflict for one side or the other. If not both.

Chimera, Hellspawn, Argus, Templar or bust.

Pretty sure the Sagittaire only came into general use at the very end of the FedComCivWar, as the earlier production was all dedicated to the war against House Kurita the Draconis March was (illegally) waging? So I guess part of it is ...are we jsut talking designs in use, or ones that were specifically featured in the Family Picnic, itself?

I think the Enforcer III and Jagermech IIIs show up in the books. Not as main character mechs, just as 'fodder.'

Actually, the case of the JägerMech III is a strange one. The Mech is not listed in the RATs of FM:FS and FM:U, but it is in that of ER:3062. That's weird, because it implies a decline in the number of JägerMech III...
Also, it is not in the novels, afaik, although some of the JägerMechs might be IIIs.

The Enforcer III seems to be more common, as expected, though again in the novels it is kind of rare. But there is a noteworthy exception, a VIP piloting an Enforcer III: Arthur Steiner-Davion! Technically he died before the Civil War (or did he survive? The old mystery....); still it is worth mentioning.

I could do what I did for the LAAF, and have a look at the AFFS if someone is interested.

Well, as far as I understand it, this thread is about the lore only. More specifically: what were the most important Mechs in the FCCW.
I mean I would not recommand the Cobra for MWO, it is just a Lyran Mech that comes up rather frequently.

The needs of MWO are sometimes quite different. However, sometimes lore and MWO needs go hand in hand (Falconer, Dragon Fire...).

That would be... using the 3067 TRO...

Razorback - 30 tons
Osiris - 30 tons
Anubis - 30 tons
Brigand - 25 tons
Red Shift - 20 tons
Chimera - 40 tons
Sha Yu - 40 tons

Some interesting stuff in there, I guess. Nothing I care for. And nothing I would consider 'notable' Civil War era mechs, novels or otherwise.

Now that I think about it, the Jagermechs I'm remembering had RACs. Which would make it a JM7-F, one of the super-weight Jagermechs, not a III.

Though I'm sure the next response is 'Those weren't in the novels either.' My memory is horrid, so it wouldn't surprise me.

Unrelated to the topic at hand though - I really would like to see the super weight Jagers. Not so much because they'd be good, but because I like Jagermechs in general.

Jagermech III and Enforcer III are ultimately just variants/upgrades of the base chassis.

A few mechs not already mentioned, that were in use by one or both sides of the Civil War:
Enfield (it's just a slightly different Enforcer, so I can't see it being added)
Rakshasa
Caesar
Battle Hawk
Cestus
Blitzkrieg

Under Current construction rules, IS omnis would be totally boned. IS XL engine in the Templar makes it too dangerous to pilot. iS Standard in the Hauptman is acceptable, but very slow. People would find that an unlocked normal BattleMech would be more flexible: I.E. Battlemaster or Banshee for changing Engines and internals, etc.

I don not agree with that assumption on the Templar....Considering the ammount of XL built Battlemasters and Banshee's, and able to do quite well. Templar would have simular silhouette and hitboxes profile to them. It would be effective still, and high mount energy in torsos a would be highly probable.

Easy solution to IS Omnis; allow changing of engine type, but not rating.

Agree that the solution is easy. Question: what is PGI's track record with easy solutions?

The Penetrator is about the most Iconic mech from the Fed Com Civil War Novels due to the fact it was piloted by Archer Christifori which is a character most of the Novels center around. He was also pretty instrumental for Victor's ultimate victory.

No, you remember that one correctly; it's the opening chapter of Endgame. Posted Image
"Sergeant Christoffer Pierce moved his seventy-ton JägerMech Kowloon Avenue [...] The targeting crosshairs burned a deep golden hue, and he pulled into the trigger. Both of his rotary cannon spat out several hundred rounds, the slugs tipped with depleted uranium for 'Mech-stopping power."

Christifori and the Penetrator were already mentioned. But let's not exaggerate. While Christifori was given substantial narration he is largely absent from the spine novels of the FCCW (i.e. Patriots and Tyrants, Storms of Fate, and Endgame). We know he was on New Avalon at the end, but the novel did not mention him anyway. This is why Pardoe later published The Longest Road, btw.
Christifori is the central character of two supplementary novels, Measure of a Hero and Call of Duty. His most noteworthy action is probably teaming up with Adam Steiner to repell the Falcons, which is described in Operation Audacity.

Yes, he is quite important, therefore he and his Penetrator have been duly noted, but he is far from being the most important character.
(Also, it's not like we would get his Clan-Tech Penetrator anyway)

PGI could add quirks for ERLLs to increase range, heat, duration, etc and make the IS-ERLLs effective as C-ERLLs.

OR... could this be an acceptable way for PGI to introduce cross-tech? You could maybe make the C-ERLLs locked equipment in the arms. Since they were clan-tech grafted to IS tech, one could make the leap that they had to be "hard wired" into the mech. It could be the hero model, or the (S) variant. And, since there is a lore base for this particular mech loadout, would the community accept it?

The downside of the Penetrator is lack of lore-based variants. Most revolve around an energy load out. One has 2 LRM 10's, but sacrifices the 2 ERLLs and 2 MPLs to do this. There is an ECM variant, but nothing with Ballistics. I'm not against PGI creating variants for game play sake - it just seems ike when they do, the hard point inflation is a little over the top.

Agreed, given how many Hunchback IICs you see in game.

I think a lack of lore variants is at this point moot. PGI will just make some up and I'm cool with that as a way of adding variety.

Now give me my Grizzly!

Personally, I really want:

Rakshasa at the top of the list (IS MAD CAT PLZ, IVE BEEN WAITING YEARS FOR THIS)

Templar

Akuma (a literal post-Clan War response to the Clans)

Savage Coyote (used to showcase ATM tech at its inception, historical importance)

Blood Asp

Black Lanner

And maybe:
Stealth
Stooping Hawk
And of course, the Sunder simply because of MW4.

It is of my personal opinion that we're still missing a few classics from before the time jump, which saddens me. There's a severe lack of Woodsmans and Firemoths, for example. Not to mention the Gladiators, Ceasar, Grand Dragon, Lynx...
