Hi All,

What mech is the best to use if you want to utilize gauss rifles? I hear the jagermech is good but have also heard things about the rifleman and king crab. Anyone have any suggestions?

Dualgauss, Gauss+Laser, Gauss+ PPC, Heavy Gauss.....?
Or just a single Gauss and suplemental weapons ? --> HBR

Whats your utilization scenario ?

Jager mech would be my favorite over Rifleman for high hardpoint sniper mechs....

Gauss Kodiak is still a mighty foe if you use dual Gauss and LPLs.

The MAD-IIC-D is a dangerous mech for its ECM capabilitys...at least in QP.

Kingkrab is fun but a pain to pilot on wavy maps.

Highlander with a single Gauss and 3LPLs and JJs

Katapult K2 with dual Gauss never realy dies.

There are several others but those are the mechs that work with me

I'm thinking dual gauss. Sniping from afar.

Mad Cat Mk II has a couple variants that come standard with dual Gauss, one can also put on dual/quad ER Large Laser and some additional lasers. All but 1 variant has the ability to mount 2-4 missiles for extra firepower.

just to be sure you understand, sniping as in one hit instant kills, does not realy exist in MWO, now most of the Mechs mentioned above can do long range fire support very well, but not sniping in the traditional sense

To do a one hit kill you have to hit the head hitbox with more than 33 damage (could go upto about 40 if they have maxed out armor and structure skills), this cannot be done with Gauss Rifles, as you cannot fire more than 2 at a time for 30 damage. and the head hitbox is not the Mechs "head" it is usualy the center pane of glass in the cockpit, for example on the Atlas it is the left eye, on some Mechs it looks like the mouth, on others it is in the middle of the Center Torso.

usualy you would want a Mech with hardpoints at about cockpit level so you can hide behind cover and only expose the top of the Mech making it harder for them to hit you, that is where many Mechs including most of the Balistic based Assualts run into issues for this sort of role, there balistic hardpoints tend to be rather low, so they have to expose most of the Mech to fire, while Mechs like Jagermech, Rifleman, and the IS Marauder have very high mounted hardpoints allowing them to expose a lot less of the Mech when firing from cover

On lower tiers Marauder IIC D is a beast with dual gauss and dual ER-L.

Agree regarding the clanners mentioned above, also had some nice games with a dualgaus mauler, but very situation dependent.
BTW my favourite dualgaus build is my Direwolf...

I think my best experiences with dual gauss have been with the Kodiak and Marauder IIC-D. Jagermech does it pretty well too with the high mounts, but lacks the tonnage for much else.

I'll go against the grain and suggest something a little different ...

If, like me, you're not a real ace with Gauss rifles (yet) and want a cheap-ish, good platform to train yourself in the mastery of Gauss rifles, I think the IS Hunchback Hero, the Grid Iron, is a really good choice.

Like all Hunchbacks, it can be a real pain to master but it's already good at the most basic level, it will teach you how to twist-and-wait while your gun charges, the hardpoint is at cockpit level, and the chassis have enough maneuverability and survivability to allow you to make a couple of mistakes while positionning yourself for the best shots.

Of course, it's still a medium 'Mechs, so if that style of gameplay doesn't gel with you, it's not a good options ...

Finally, it's quirks are nice :

Ballistic Cooldown− 10 %
Energy Range+ 10 %
Gauss Rifle Cooldown− 10 %
Missile Cooldown− 15 %
Missile Velocity+ 10 %
Base Armor (RT)+ 18
Base Structure (CT)+ 8
Base Structure (LA)+ 4
Base Structure (LT)+ 6
Base Structure (RA)+ 4
Base Structure (RT)+ 12
