Not that melee weapons have a chance in hell of being released, and properly so, as much as I hate to admit it.

Alt. Config. U
This unusual configuration appears to be used to support boarding actions against enemy spacecraft. Two torso mounted Liquid Storage tanks provide additional reaction mass for the jump jets. Eight machine guns can rapidly destroy enemy battle armor, while three Heavy Medium Lasers and three Micro Pulse Lasers scour the armor off of hardened targets. To keep track of enemy units, the U configuration carries a Light Active Probe, and a Clan ECM Suite interferes with enemy targeting systems. The right arm carries a Spot Welder presumably to seal hull breaches. Strangely, this configuration carries a Sword, marking the first time a Clan unit has carried a dedicated melee weapon. Not happening, though. PGI cannot into melee weapons, kicks, or punches for whatever reason.

Make it only usable if your mech is stationary (or going very slow) and has hands. - Has to stop and swing a big, slow haymaker.
Make it do small damage to the arm being used (no damage with melee weapon equipped), big damage to the person hit.
Shake the cockpit of the person getting hit.
So long as we don't have light mechs running around at 130+ KPH spamming punch, we should be good
Also, swords would be viable from a lore perspective
Its been in battletech before (well, they were still CALLED hatchets though) - and when you consider that you can thrust into a mech and pry open missile doors or penetrate soft parts of a mech (like a cockpit) ...its an advantage over the chopping of a hatchet.
I mean, I will admit I like the Japanese mecha shows too...

Yes it would but I so want to see an Atlas pummeling a Direwhale with an Urbie or Locust. We've already got the Balck Knight which had avariant with a sword: BL-9-KNT : One of the so-called "Clanbuster" refits developed by ComStar in the lead-up to the Battle of Tukayyid, this variant has been equipped with an Vlar 300 XL Engine, allowing it to mount an upgraded and heavier weapons load. The PPC was upgraded to an Magna Sunspot ER PPC, the medium lasers switched to Aberdovey Medium Pulse Lasers, a Aberdovey Large Pulse Laser added to the center torso, and both the small laser and Beagle Active Probe were removed. To handle the heavier heat load, the heat sinks were upgraded to double strength versions. In addition, for close-in work, the Black Knight carries long-sword shaped 5-ton Hatchet in its left hand, allowing it to make devastating physical attacks. Here's a list of other that had melee weapons: http://www.sarna.net...lee_BattleMechs

Swords as a mech weapon system are really, really dumb. From a mechanical point of view, I doubt we'd see the range of motion in the arms and wrists of our mechs to make sword strikes viable, as swords require proper strike geometry to be effective in the first place. They also need proper edge geometry to be effective, this is even before what they are striking into needs to vulnerable to a slicing motion...
To be blunt (heh), a sword is a bad weapon to use against armour. If you want to take to melee against something that is armoured, a club, flail, mace, warhammer or maul is a much better choice. Just look at what weapons were idea for fighting knights in plate armour, it wasn't the traditional arming sword, it was the mace or warhammer. Plate was great at deflecting swords, not so grate against getting caved in by blunt force weapons or being punctured by weapons such as arrows and spears.
