Right there with you, LordNothing. Do I have 1200 spare MC's for another dropdeck? Definitely. Do I want another dropdeck (or two)? I most certainly do. Am I going to pay 1200 MC's for another dropdeck? Absolutely not. Never going to happen.
If they ever have a sale on dropdecks, I may very well purchase two more. But I am never going to spend 1200 MC's on one. 1200 is well beyond what I am willing to pay.

Spoken like someone without a clue. MS has been IS more than clan lately, and we just broke our clan contract. You know who we consulted?
No one. As a matter of fact, EVIL beats us far more than we beat them, and EVIL just switched to Clan 3 or 4 days ago. We don't care, and usually queue against them multiple times a night without ducking them. According to them we are one of the only groups to do so.
We finished up our goal, which was to get most of our player base a few mech bays, and now we are going IS for 3-4 weeks again.
When we are clan people whine about the Critlynx and Linebackers....when we are IS they whine about Assassins (with a little bit of cause unfortunately) and tonnage/structure quirks. It's pretty amusing.

I agree that it would be better if there was a reason for some of the merc units to choose opposite sides, but the problem is that currently the merc leaders are all motivated by pretty much the same things - the contract bonus and preference for Clan mechs (for some this preference is slight). Most importantly there are now three new factions to level up and harvest some pretty nice rewards.
With PGI handing a bunch of (mostly) reasonable people the same set of options, it is not surprising that many of them are making the same choices.
Maybe if the top contract bonus was split so that only the first few units that took contracts on each side got the max benefit that would encourage them to make the choice to split up? But even if that was the case, I think the three new clan factions added are going to keep those units Clan side anyway.
Maybe PGI could add Comstar and one of the larger Periphery States as new IS factions or something and that would give some of these units a viable option to play IS and still get maximum benefits.
Xann
Xann is dead right. Most of the core MS players are rank 9-10 mercs, and we have a large number of newer players starved for mechbays. We also like both our clan and our IS mechs, so we alternate. Most importantly we check with other groups on one thing....and one one thing only....we talk to people we know who or opposite of us and was about the wait times. If the wait times are high, we stay put where we are until times improve.
All the rest is BS.

Recommend you add to it: don't bring LRMs to FP.
Just don't.

Just remember that LRMs are effective based on the ability of the target more than yourself. If the target is decent at the game he's going to roll you when you bring lrms.

I'm not that great a player but something i'd add would be "share responsibility on seige defence"
If you are defending and some players are tending to be more up front and losing mechs faster than you, make them take a second line role, and for those hanging back they need to be upfront.
I hate nothing more than some players having to reinforce on defence because the enemy is in the base and some guy with additional mechs just hanging back sniping or whatever. This is prevalent moreso on seige because the regrouping on defence is not always as defined.
If you don't share the responsibility and hang back and the other teams regroups as 4 12 man pushes, there is an increased chance they will camp the spawn point and a few players that didn't share armour properly at the start will be killed as soon as they drop.
Its a 2 way street, some players have to temper their aggression and not burn mechs others have to be more agressive. the goal being having at least 12 mechs to defend on the enemies 4th wave i suppose.

Set a man on fire and he's warm for the rest of his life.
In all seriousness though, this is one of the best threads concerning prep for FP I've seen, and I wish it were required reading for entry into the mode.

Don't forget to add:
*Log in to Teamspeak/Discord/VOIP and discuss with drop commander what today's strategy will be, and adapt to said strategy.
Teamwork is one cornerstone of success and people have yet to understand this.
OMG, must re-emphasize this!
Had a pair of spuds fill out a drop last night, UG! Both had Voip off. Neither could hear calls so, of course they went off to play QP w/respawn. Neither could do 200 damage across four mechs. They almost cost us the match but once they were PD in record time, we could wrap things up as 10 v 12.
Would not pay attention to typed commands either.
People, you do NOT need a mic, but you MUST be able to hear. If you cannot or will not play as part of the team in the team queue, stay OUT of the team queue.
Furthermore, VOIP should be forced on for everyone in CW. No exceptions.

For anyone coming across this little thread remember communication is a BIG part of team work, so if you cut it off or just ignore it then you are handicapping yourself straight away. Even at times when I can't use a mic (primarily when the DMC has gone to sleep), I still listen to calls on TS/VOIP or even pay attention to the command wheel/typed chat. It all helps and can make a big difference in the outcome of the game.

Pay?
PGI has given enough FREE MC to buy two more.
They are paying you.

They haven´t paid this "salty bittervet" not enough to go and shell out 1200MC for a single dropdeck, not by lightyears .
Good post OP, bumping like the shameless erppc-fetishist I am .
