In an effort to answer the question of the OP as it was intended:
The "most effective" weapon for me, that is a mechanism and creation of this game as opposed to some more over arching theme of personal or martial characteristics (seriously guys, the provacative obtuseness is strong up in here), I have to go with the IS UAC5, with the standard AC10 a close second. Seems like whenever I manage to play CW of late, I get a hot map and so I take my hot map drop deck and those are the weapons that are used by it. I think we've won slightly more than we've lost since 4.1 dropped so I am assuming they are thus "effective" for me.

Oh yeah. Clan side: probably ERML (got at least a couple on nearly every clan mech). But I think I have only played like 3 CW matches as a clanner so who the hell really knows.

You heretics, the ONLY correct answer is ac20. Shoulder shot, twist your opponent during his laser burn, best sight and feeling in the game.

This thread is hard to read.

Most effective FP weapons, for me, are ERLL and Machine Guns.

Clan - MPL.

IS - Still LPL, just mixed with MLs or ERMLs.

With the jam rates like they are UACs are just bad, with some IS AC5 exceptions with the right quirks.

However due to the tonnage involved in ballistics you're just overall better served in most cases by boating lasers.

My experience differs a bit. I think UAC5s work on hot maps. I use mauler, cyclops, jaegermeister and locust for these and kill quite a lot. They are just more versatile on hot maps. Range, even brawl sometimes as well as midrange is quite covered. If I get pushed by srm-brawlers in my laservomitbuilds for example, I croak pretty quick. With ultras I have good effective range and can dish out earlier than with my battlemasters.

ive been taking an absurd number of merms for their uncanny ability to rapidly annihilate turrets and objectives. they work on mechs too, though not as effective as a laser alpha. a lot cooler though. i find while the other guy shuts down i keep firing merms in their face.

i dont boat them, usually just a single launcher (usually backed by lasers and/or ballistics), but its enough.

Don't be obtuse, the weapons don't matter so much just as long as you work together effectively. We've hammered teams and been hammered, in Large Pulse Battlemasters, Light Rushes, Atlas Rambles, Nova Trains, Highlander Packs and even Lurmageddons (shamefur dispray!) but the most effective games and one consistent in the winning games is good teamwork and communications.

the best weapon
is a weapon
and all those billions of dollars that are spent on
weapons is proof

so why not ask what is your best weapon
if I wanted to know what the best radio or tactic I would have asked

You are right and I apologise.

With the *ahem* diversity and mix of maps and Game modes there is no single weapon that is most effective.

Stupid question is stupid.

Weapons/loadouts do matter, they matter critically. Bad mechs with bad loadouts negate the advantage of communication pretty seriously.

It's a reasonable question to ask what weapons are best.

The real key is how you're dropping. If you're pugging, stick to laservomit. Something mobile. Assaults are less viable because you'll have a harder time managing your positioning. While pugging, laservomit in quick-ish heavies is probably the best bet.

In a group, an assault is more viable. You'll also want something fast and light for cleaning up and at least 1 good cool-running DPS boat style mech for a push wave. Something you can just hold down the triggers and the W key on without worrying about being too hot to shoot back.

Pugging? Laservomit, mobility.

My view is that mid to long range direct fire weapons are best.

Why>>>>>>>

1) Your weapons are firing more often coz the target is in range moar often. If you can see it, you can shoot it.
Wid short range weapons often you cannot shoot coz range.
This way, when the target gets close you are facing a damaged target instead of a fresh one.

2) You can poke with such weapons and thus use terrian masking. This reduces the damage you take while
damaging the target which means the target will die before you do. So again when the target gets close
,they 'll be an easy kill.

So I guess the best weapons in my view would be:

Clan - Med ER lasers, Large Pulse Lasors, ER-PPC, UAC2/5/10, Gauass Rifle
Inner sphere - Large and ER Large Lasors, Med ER, Large Pulse, PPC, ER PPC, Light PPC, AC2/5/10, Gauass,
Probably missed some

NOTE: Weapons can't compensate for poor gunnery and lack of focus fire and teamwork which is the true cause of most losses.

Depending on the maps :

Long range maps - I prefer to use erppc, as it is easier for me to get positive trades against LL users.
Mid range maps - laser vomit, in QP I usually prefer to use gauss... But since I have 300+ pings when I play FP (in QP I usually just stick around oceanic as I can get around 100 ping for oceanic, my internet sucks and I usually move around alot :P) I can't really land the gauss rounds where I wanted it to T.T
Push maps (generally siege mode, except Boreal Vault) - I prefer to bring the uacs with laser back up, its easier to maintain the dps output with ballistics :)
