I prefer to kill as many mechs as i can or make as many enemies waste as much time as i can to kill me.
Usually it helps to win games.

Look, i am not a top player, In fact the best i've ever gotten on a leader board is when i played my 2 top mechs for an entire month and broke 2k, or was it 2.5k? i dunno, look lol

But why is it more often than not if i am not in the top 3, it's a loss.. Maybe it is not the case, but i swear it feels like that. Am i the only one that feels like that?

PS this is coming from the guy that first 100 matches had a .43 win/loss

What I find is I'm less apt to use some of my less than top tier mechs and builds when I'm actually bothering to keep score or give a darn about my PSR tier or ranking.

I tend to pay attention to that sort of thing for like my first 100 games in season and then...well who really cares anyhow.

What I have been doing is getting back into the practice of drop calling in the solo queue. Currently I have the presence of mind to call about 1 in 3 drops I'm on and win most of the ones I call ( I'm no tactical genius but any plan beats no plan)

The thing is some of my mech builds work as command mechs while others not so much. If I'm using a light harasser I am frequently franticly piloting my mech and fairly detached from the main battle lines. Not so good for calling a drop.

But I digress ... I find that the best way to improve your win/loss ratio in the solo queue is have someone calling the drop even a mediocre commander is better than 12 players vaguely attempting the same thing.

I have difficulty playing "fun" mechs as opposed to playing "serious" ones in public queue. It seems, like the OP, that if I am not bringing something reliable, the team often cannot fight its way out of a paper bag. This distresses me because I'd love to occasionally win if I am not doing a disproportionate amount of work in public queue, so that I can take something a little more fun or unusual into a fight.

In group queue, however, things are a little different. At least then you have some teammates that are coordinated. Odds are better they can muster up some damage on the field.

Normally, I just shoot the guy with AMS. With lasers. Until the AMS goes away with his arm. Or I maneuver around the bubble and shoot something else. Usually both. Except this one could shoot through walls, because AMS magically allows you to kill missiles through tons of rocks. That game? Textbook "This is why I hate Crimson" match.

I mean heck, a few games before I was the one carrying:

Posted Image

And sometimes I even just try to carry but you're just not fast enough to catch up with the guys playing "stand on the square":

But that's OK. At least I know the other team had to flee me rather than fight (sensibly, I kept murdering them) to win. That's a consolation prize. But there's usually only so many under-200s you can compensate for.

So the better question is is there even a way to make the potatoes git gud?
Because I have that one friend who IS a potatoe in MWO and no matter how much I tried to explain him how it works he couldn't execute even the most simple things. So are potatoes a helpless case we just have to live with?
Do we need just a better rating system to prevent potatoes meeting the better players?
How does a potatoe only match even look like?

Seriously? Some of us are retired old horse soldiers wipper-snapper.... New players we want to keep....eh?!

Potato match: one of the best MWO games I have ever been involved in was on Polar, before the skill tree change. Two teams that did everything that would make the "expert" players blood boil and brains explode.... We were all over the place. We fought in places I've not seen fought in since. We did everything wrong that is possible to mess up... We even called a push and 1/2 the team went one way and the other 1/2 went the other way.... We had to remind an Assault LRM boat he had LRM's.... "Ah, LRM guy, you ARE a LRM boat, yes...!?!?" "Holly crap, ah.......yeah,.... sorry,..... I've been distracted.." Think Keystone Cops in the snow. Munitions flying everywhere....it looked like the first night over Bagdad. If it moved it got shot by someone, from somewhere and I'm not sure who was shooting whom....... Almost everyone was typing or on mic talking and helping each other out.... "hey, what key is the targeting key? How come my missles don't work?" hitting the wrong buttons for forward and back; usually at the worst time... "Ooops" should have been a call sign... And, best of all, no one could hit crap even standing still..... The Gauss/PPC guys hit 15%, the brawlers couldn't make up their minds who to shoot first so they shot at anything that moved. Several brawlers ran out of ammo because they didn't know about range..... The LRM guys didn't focus on anyone long enough to kill them and they kept changing targets.... "ah, which one should I shoot? Which one do you need me to shoot?" What's the red diamond thingy mean? Cause I got one getting close and is the light with ot without the plus sign in the middle?" A great match !! All the time was used and we won, somehow, since we were both down to 4 mechs each using only secondary weapons (out of ammo or stripped) and it would have taken another 10 minutes for someone to win.......

That was the most fun I've ever had.... I printscreened the final list and checked the Leaderboard......guess what, we were all just average players. No heros, no experts, no team giants or super meta guys....... Fun does not equal skill. Fun is a component of not having any expectations and just doing things that seem right.........and, experiencing mistakes, that in most cases, were just funny !

It's a game......enjoy it and be silly............

I partially disagree the said match up there ran nearly 10minutes if you can't even get a shot after 2/3rd of the match time is over then someone is doing something REALLY wrong.

Thats pretty easy - you drop in a slow Mech at a Far From Action Drop Point and everywhere you arrive there is only Smoking Wreckage left while your Team is pressing W for Win... ;)

I always take whatever I want in public queue. Last night, for example, was me running an Arrow with an XL180 and stupidly heavy weapons payloads to see if a BJ-O would be unsalvageable (conclusion: it isn't the worst thing ever). Now, my stats reflect this; if all I did was run my MedLas LCT-1E or my ERLL+Gauss RFL-3N, my stats would be way better. But even running silly things, they aren't horribad; my WLR is still above 1, my KDR is [usually...too much Assault potato this season] still significantly above 2. You just need to have a solid idea what it is you want to do with your suboptimal build and play accordingly. As long as it isn't one of those no-damage troll builds (e.g. all flamers), the rest will fall into place.

I was thinking 6 NARCs and 2 TAG on a HMN.

Often it feels like that yeah.

Though sometimes you get these weird game where YOU totally suck, a you're sure you'll lose. But then you take another look and your team's rolling the enemy, despite ~zero contribution from you. And all you can do is look:

The whole concept of "carrying" is silly and odd, to me.

In the end everyone gets the wins they deserve. If you aren't teaming up with other people, you carry only yourself.

12 kills 12 assist is what I would call carrying a team.

More often than not that's how it feels. Which is a joke as I'm a very average player.

I checked the leaderboard in the client earlier today and it says I'm ranked number 403.

I mean I consistently have games where I'm one of the first people to die and dont break 200 damage, so I have no idea what's going on. I have a KDR of like .60.

I'll rarely have a game where I break 500-700 damage but get almost not kills.

I don't get it.

That is not really what i was meaning..

It seams like if i am in the top 3 scores on the team, i win more often than not. Maybe because i am over performing my rating?

I also feel like i can win more often if i play well in a light or medium, than even really good games in a heavy or assault. though i am probably worse at assaults than any other class

Lots of matches will put you high on the leaderboard.
