Imagine for a moment, a Mech hides around a corner and you shoot a crate of ammo. The ammo explodes doing some minor splash damage to the mech nearby. It might not be much, but it could add another dynamic to the game. While not for every map, it could be something added to some select future maps.

Hitting some crates, a fuel tank, one of those discarded vehicles and having them explode would certainly create a much more visceral feeling to the battle.
There are options for alternate effects to the damage as well such as a temporary heat spike, scrambling sensors, interfering with the different vision modes, slowing mech movement briefly.
Probably just need to be careful how much of an effect they have but it would certainly add some new dynamics/features to the battles.

Oh yeah! Reminds me of good old MechCommanderGold. Also engines having a chance to explode would be cool, and when they don't, some more damage to the wreck and the engine goes BOOM! Suddenly the wrecks on the battlefield would have a tactical purpose...
It was always fun in MW4:Mercs when a group brawl ended in a chain reaction.

What idiot left all these red exploding barrels lying around?

On a serious note though, while active hazards on the battlefield seems an interesting idea, but maybe it could do more harm than good. I mean it would be funny to kill a locust with an explosive barrel, but that might also hurt your teammates.
Adding this when we already have idiot allies on the game that would core you accidentally, is not good for me.

Imagine for a moment that fat King Crab walking over that rocky bridge on Tourmaline Desert. You'd Alhpa the bridge and with a few extra shots the bridge crumbles and the King Crab falls into the valley, getting hefty spread damage.
Imagine if that bridge would gave an X amount of structure in the first place and every second a Mech would stand or move on it, it would wear the structure down a certain ammount. Of course in respect to the weight of the Mech. If the structure is gone, the bridge crumbles.
