here in murica we get these cheap russet taters that have almost no natural flavor of their own. hince the potato is usually heavily salted and served as a side dish. its the basis of every fast food fry and potato chip you can get round these parts. i can make some impressive mashed potatoes with them but this involves a lot of butter, salt and cream. my favorite way is double baked, bake your taters round 450 for an hour. quarter them the long way, scoop out the innards into the center of a pie tin, ring with the skins. throw on ample bacon, cheese, onions, butter and sour cream, stick the tin in the oven and broil it for about 10 minutes.

you can get red or white potatoes but they are really expensive here. you can grow taters in the local soil and climate (southeast alaska), i helped plant a large batch of purple taters and i got to keep all mangled ones, they were good. i helped dig up another batch for some of my sister's ex-inlaws and those weren't bad either. but we really dont have the population to require large scale potato production. the potatoes we get seem to come from washington, which frankly is a terrible place to get produce from.

The potato insult originates from 4chan.

On Brell Serilis sever back in 1999-2000 for Everquest, people would call folks using bare-bones computers with non 3dfx voodoo chipset grahics 'playing on a potato powered computer', which evolved into slang of a player not using /assist in groups and the person(s) complaining about screen stutter as 'being as good as their computer - a potato', to eventually just calling the player 'a potato player' right around the time the Shadows of Luclin expansion dropped. Or that's how I recall it.

4chan is super at inventing memes, but quite often they draw their source material from somewhere.

Teer Kerensky, the key word here is "ordinary".

Here in Belgium, while potatoes were originally from the middle of the American continent (as far as I remember, Aztecs/Mayas cultivated them along with tomatoes),

Naw, they're from the Andes. And they predate the Aztecs and Maya by thousands of years.

Sure, take high praise from being called a potato all you'd like

Just don't take the same praise from your leaderboard stats

I like potatoes.

It's a Belgian thing.

You cannot be Belgian and not like potatoes, not really.

Stoemps, traditionnal Flemish/Brussels dishes, are made from mashed potatoes and vegetables.

And yes, while "stoemp" is a mix of Flemish, Brusseleir and Wallon, it does have the same meaning as "stomp" in English ...

The tradionnal Belgian way of making fries (chips for those in the UK) is part of our Constitution, including details such as the variety of potato, how to grow them, cut them, cook them and serve them.

On that note, most "friteurs" (a french Belgian term for cooks who specialize in cooking fries) will tell you that a good fry doesn't need salt, or ketchup, or mayo, it should be delicious on its own.

It is actually illegal for restaurants here in Belgium to refuse to offer fries on their menus, even "exotic" ones likes Indian, Morrocan or Japanese/Chinese. Makes for some wierd combos ...

We have a Knightly Order of the Potato, awarded to Chefs and Scientists (!) that make breakthroughs in the art of potato-cooking or that are particularly representative of the traditionnal ways of cooking.

I'm not joking.

So when someone wants to insult me and calls me a potato, I take it as high praise.

Belgian fries are legendary. As cute and funny as some of the above by Lorcryst NySell may sound, if you had belgian fries only once in your life, you will understand. Legendary!

I'm not ashamed of my leaderboards stats, either.

I made mistakes. Big bad ones.

I learn from them.

Now, being able to ignore insults and trolls on the Internet is a survival mechanic for me, so many things going wrong in my life already, and being my own worst critic, means that I cannot afford the energy to care about what an anonymous guy on the Internet thinks about me.

And this thread was more about some light hearted humour and nonsense than competitive stats for annoying pixels ...

On begalf of all the cooks, farmers, scientists and plain old moms that have strived to make good fries for others to enjoy since 1831, thank you.
