Most of the things that gimp MWO have little to do with the game engine.
The major design element that "gimps" MWO to me has always been the incorporation of "f2p" aspects into a franchise that never was designed for it and has never been that way. Its always been that. If the pay elements of this game were literally just cosmetic customization, that would be a different (better) story, since that doesn't touch gameplay. I too think it has nothing to do with the game engine, a lot of comes down to knowledge of how to
use and program said engine as well though.
Imagine if all the grind for a mech or "skills", packs, and typical elements of "f2p" were removed from this game - what you'd have left is a sandbox shoot 'em up game where everyone has
equal access, plays on whatever map they want, joins the server of their choice, etc. Sounds fun to me. There would be no constant pressure to grind and other typical cancerous crap of "f2p" that players like me despise quite a lot that prefer a more 'traditional' multiplayer game. It's the same story for me with games like World of Tanks, I like the arcade combat design with 'realism' sprinkled in with a bunch of tanks from different eras or countries, but I simply despise the grind or paying out the *** for a Tank.
WoT, like MWO, would be instantly enjoyable to me if I can pick whatever damn tank out of hundreds I want for $60 and pick a server to join just for the fun of it, and drop-out at any time. That's why games like Overwatch are more fun to me, because I technically get all the content for a fixed price and simply choose to play as whatever avatar. I have found players far more toxic in f2p titles like MWO and WoT as well when you do not play a specific way or customize a certain way, otherwise other players get incredibly angry when they don't get as much "(grind) bucks" after the match.
Anyways, I will never understand why people would rather have "MWO2" or some such thing, rather than traditional multiplayer tacked on to an actual MechWarrior game. You still get Multiplayer out of a single purchase and frankly does not burn the wallet collecting Pokemon - I mean Mechs. Perhaps the need for "instant-gratification" like a mobile game is the reason. If PGI goes after people trying to mod in some sort of rudimentary mod for multiplayer for their MW5 experimental game, I'm just not going to bother buying it all, it's just not a smart move to shut down people trying to increase shelf-life of a game.
