So having just come back to the game I was wondering, are the original founders four worth anything or should I just focus on another mech?

Catapult is still decent, for missile purposes. The rest are mediocre compared to the alternatives. Especially compared to Clan alternatives. And ask around before you mess with the new skill tree system.

Catapults still a gem, LRM/MRM wise. The Jenner and Atlas are pretty bad. Hunchback is ok.

The HBK-4G is decent enough for quick play. Catapult is great for SRM splat. Atlas and Jenner are meh, though not unsalvagable for quickplay.
There are, however, way better 'Mechs in the game for all of the above.

How do you run a CPLT-C1 (F) for Splat? What do you pair with the ASRM12?
Oh, is that the Founders? Thought it was the A1.
Also, to answer the question, SNPPC. It's my MAD-5D without the laser backups.

Short answer: just focus on the newer clan mechs to ease back in. Don't bother with founder mechs.

Use the cat or the huntch to grind cbills, they are still fine.

Hunchback 4G. Put in a light engine 250 or 255. 3 er medium lasers and ac20 with 6 tones of ammo is still a blast to play, still my most played mech the 4G. Its not fance, its not beautiful but ill be damed it still does the job well. Rapid firing AC20 is hard to beat.
