I seem to be able to get the game to play.. but the graphics are horrible.. (now im not asking for new age graphics) but im getting 800x600 and i can't get any details out of it..

I can see other graphics options (1920x1200 is my native) but its all highlighted in red.. it will put the menu in that resolution if i press exit while in a game but nothing else is that resolution.. and the whole game lags a lot.. i just can't seem to understand why this is happening.. i set things up with the autoconfig_MERCS tool but it never saves it.. when i open it back up, its set to low with 800x600 again

my system is as follows
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
8 gigs of ram
GTX 260 x2

has anyone else run into this sort of thing?

I had similar trouble with the re-release of MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries. You need to choose the resolution through the Mek Tek Client not the Mercenaries game. I chose the proper setup through the Client, but it wouldn't stay for some reason. I reinstalled it, again chose the proper resolution, and it worked perfectly afterwards (1920x1080).

On this computer i believe i only have the mektek version.. i don't have the old versions on here, so the settings should be through the mektek client already right?..

The client is the grey/tan box when you first install. The game settings are through the actual game.
