The thing is still by far my most fragile heavy mech. Most mediums feel tougher.
Possibly just shows what armor quirks are worth in a game with 80+point laser alphas.

I disagree.
It feels tanky enough. Also gets damage reduction with closed doors. Remember to twist far (almost 90°) to shield the sidetorso. The arms, while not perfect, soak up a fair amount of damage, too.

armor wouldnt help it without breaking it, the issue is hit boxes and PP damage.

Archer is still not a frontline mech, despite huge amount of armor quirks. So play it as a skirmisher, and do not facetank.

Personally, I find my 2 LRM15 + 6 Medium lasers Archer very very tanky..
More tanky than many assaults even..
I get excellent scores with it.. it's one of my favorite mechs..

Agreed, my base model has the same build. One of my best scoring mechs

The archer I recently bought has quickly become my favorite mech.
2 MRM40s, 6 SRM2s ARC-5W
The MRMs are great for brawling and mid to close range poking.
The SRMs are good for sustained DPS and, since they're 2s, the spread isn't very wide.
It rips mechs up pretty good and I haven't had any problems with survival.
Whatever archer you're driving, I recommend giving 2 MRM40s + whatever other weapons it will fit a try.

Yep. My dedicated LRM alt runs an ARC-2R with 2xALRM-20, TAG, and 5 Medium Lasers. Prior to the nerfs to... every system it uses, it would put up VERY respectable performances in T3. It's even incredibly XL-safe if you actually use the bay doors for that extra protection any time you're not actively unloading your launchers.
Of course, then PGI went and killed Artemis AND medium lasers in one swipe, so I haven't bothered playing it since.
