In your opinion what mech was the first one that you came to think of as OP (Overpowered)?

For me it goes way...way....back to closed beta if I recall correctly. I'm having trouble recalling if it was the Hunchback with 9 medium lasers or the Catapult, aka Splatapult, that was wrecking face at the time.

Moving forward there was a brief period where the Stalker scared the crap outta me. Shortly thereafter I learned to take it's ears off and the fear died.

Stormcrows were deadly at first introduction.

Direwolfs had that HUGE facetime alpha.

Timberwolfs were so nimble and dangerous.

Then the Kodiak...for awhile it was da bomb.

Did I miss anything (of course I did)?

Dual AC/20 catapults or even Dual Gauss catapults. 30-40 points of FLPPD were considered a major issue at the time and Gauss Rifles didn't have that absurd charge up mechanic they do now.

I think the direwolf was the first mech that felt truly overpowered when it was introduced

my how far its fallen...

30-40 PPFLD is STILL an issue

its just not as much of an issue as it once was because now we have bigger issues like 70+ damage laser vomits

but PGI still needs to address both issues.

PPC/AC5 poptarts, most commonly done in victors. You cant spread damage because its PPFLD. You would drop in a match and almost every mech on the field was some kind of poptart. It was like MW5 all over again. Everyone was scared shitless of moving because all it took was a few seconds of exposure while moving from cover to cover to take multiple alphas to one location. Gameplay consisted solely of poptarts poking at each other from long range.

The Splatapult because the Boomcat and Swayback were both hobbled with significant drawbacks. Either very slow or all their weapons in one place.

Splatapult was quick, had JJs and due to SRM damage overlap bug could one shot kill almost any mech.

Knockdown Dragons, super tanky Centurions, Boomjager/Boomcat, 3 ERPPC+Gauss Misery, poptart Victors and Highlanders, then basically all the Clan and quirk stuff happened.

I miss the tanky Centurians. They're so mediocre now.

Gausscat or Boomcat, those were the standard "EZ Mode" carry mechs way back when.

Splatcat didn't really shine until after the Streakcats stacking onto Raven 3Ls reigned supreme. That would be another thing, Raven 3Ls, if you saw us with our 8 bright green/yellow Squawkmechs in group that would be gg. Splatcat made its entrance shortly after.

The rest is history.

Small lasers, actually
Back when there was only SHS

They alone were responsible for the doubled heat they have/had

Splatcat

I remember it quite distinctly, as I was exclusively piloting Jenners at the time.

My official answer is the Catapult. That poor mech has been the victim (cause?) of all major OP PLZ NERF moments.

2x AC20
2x GR
SSRM-2 "Shaken Baby and Blinding" mode
SRM6 Splatcat

Until the Dakka war criminals Cataphract and Jaggermech, it seems like the Catapult was always the mech to make the tears flow.

That said, my unofficial first "OP" mech? Raven-3L. ECM back in the beginning was just absolutely stupidly OP. I literally feared running into a Raven more than I did an Atlas "back in the day".

Guasscats.

Boomcats were nasty, but that was because of map size, once maps were of a sensible area, they fell away as you had to be xl or so slow mechs could walk backwards and kite them.

splatcats strange how they became a feared mech as people were complaining about how bad hit reg was and yet lights evaporated in a volley..

3x PPC Hunchback 4P. It was a nightmare from beyond. Came back from a 4 man deficit and scored 7 kills to win a game with one of those. Back then, 30 pin-point would kill you very quickly, and there was no ghost heat. You could alpha those things with reckless abandon.

6x PPC Stalkers - in the days before ghost heat (and probably one of the main reasons for it), getting 6 PPCs in the face as you rounded a corner or peeked over a hill was sure to ruin your day.

Twin Gauss Catapults. At the time, heatsinks were terribad, so any weapon that produced heat was not especially good. Therefore gauss was the best choice, and the only 'mech that could bring two of them was the Catapult, so it reigned supreme.
