It's been like this before, long gaps of minimal communication and seemingly anemic development mixed with bursts of hype and rushed low quality "big" patches followed by a couple equally rushed hotfixes for whatever they broke and then a new period of slumber and silence.

Whatever the reason is, this is how PGI operates. It's not a good sign of course but can't really be used as an indication of doom either since this isn't really different from before. This is simply their workflow, they think this is a good way to develop and market a game.

What IS different is the reduced quality of mech animations and other slip ups around mech releases, yes that is worrying because mech releases are the one thing that used to have consistently high quality all around (except balancing) even when nothing else happened. That is a difference that perhaps warrants some questions about what's going on up there, but it could also be that someone on the mech release team quit and they haven't caught up.

I hate to say it but the quality has been the same since 2014.

Reuse animations whenever possible, tweak them after Christmas.

Adder/Kitfox use Raven animations, minus the toes. Locust does too.

Most mechs are using the same 6 animation sets. There's the hobble humanoid (Awesome, Thunderbolt for some examples; very common), the waddle humanoid (Battlemaster), the Generic humanoid (Dragon, Centurion, now the Hunchback -- it used to have an original animation set that I call the "swagger" due to the extreme torso twisting motion with each step, since removed though based on Mech Commander's opening cinematic's "HardCase" which had some swagger in his Hunchback's walk) the excited chicken (All derivatives of the Raven walk/run cycle based on MechCommander's Raven run opening cinematic -- Hunchback's original walk animation was also based on this; but has been replaced with one of the two generic humanoid motions]) (Catapult, Mad Dog, the Waddle step (Timber Wolf, Ebon Jaguar, Stalker), the 100 tonner Waddle step (modified Stalker animation to give more exaggerated sway, used on King Crab and Night Star; I don't consider this its own set).

Most double-jointed mechs (except the Cicada which has its own unique animations) are using Hobble Humanoid and Generic Humanoid... which doesn't have that extra knee joint and as such doesn't move.

Since there's a crapload of likes already, I wanna put this link here in the hopes that it gets the popular tag and maybe PGI will see it... or at least the community manager. Feel free to link it in a tweet to Russ, too.

There's a few kinda unique animations from 2012 still lingering around, but not really.

Jenner shares Commando run animations and generic humanoid walk.
Commando shares Atlas walk animation (butt swagger!)
.....that's pretty much all that has survived.

Take a look at when Swagger Walk was both in cockpit and on the mech.

Now....

Take note: The cockpit change had been around since 2013, but Hunchback didn't lose his swagger walk until 2014.

Firestarter, Panther, and Wolfhound use Generic Humanoid walks of the Dragon/Centurion, and each uses a different run from the other animation types. You know back when they at least tried to vary it up.

To follow up, 2014's issue.

Again the topic is the animations.

I can't help but imagine that PGI might actually have a set of animations with those names.

Everything seemd normal to me? You sure you're not noticing this for the first time? A few secrets are being kept for mechcon but nothing else has changed. MW5 dev started in 2013 or 2014.

I am little disappointed that the Black Lanner, that I have waited for all this time, has only Jade Falcon patterns and no other faction content. That seems to me to be even the art department is doing other things.

As far as the new map goes, it could be a test bed or failed design for MW5. The flyby just screams storyline mission to me. Although it could just be a jump jet map being released to validate the hoppy Thanatos at the same time? Of course jumpy mechs are nothing new either.

I see a lot saying this has been happening for years. But, like OP said, IMO this past year has been noticeably worse.

I’ve already posted that we are not speculating about the number of lost players. Leaderboard numbers tell the whole story. Year over year last month was a loss of 37% of the active playerbase. Lose that amount of your paying customers, cuts need to be made. As well as the shifting of resources to MW5 as a number have pointed out.

I should also note that the player base was super bitter last November because they thought PGI was gonna quit by early 2017. Instead, they announced a **** ton of things at Mech Con and made people really excited about the game. And the game is still going. I think the info lull is bad for PR, but I understand why Russ does it. He likes to see our excitement, and Mech Con gives him that venue.

Well me deciding to exclude Vancouver from my December itinerary -- again -- shows just how much excitement I have.

PGI is simply demoralized because of Russ's stance against Quad mechs.

Not saying I agree or disagree with OP (although some things lag and seem far too long to be 'fixed')

We forget (or ignore) that PGI, as small as it is, it rapidly approaching its biggest event of the year.

Mech Con is an accumulation of most of PGI employees, but also many of the other 'names' in the battletech publishing universe. I am almost positive the PGI folks are/will be given PR assignments that most are not used to. It is also 'The Showcase' for PGI to publicly reveal new stuffs. Remember last years MW5 reveal? How many saw that coming? Couple to three months prior to MechCon, PGI mostly went silent other than monthly patches, quick fixes and Mech Packs (gotta keep the lights on) .and an occasional blurb from Russ.

Not defending PGI here, just pointing out what else they have going other than business as usual...

BEHOLD, YOU IN BIRB COUNTRY NAO!

It's a matter of insufficient resources.

They can put what they have into MWO at it's current level, or MW5 at the cost of neglecting MWO for some time.

Given Transverse, the decision seems clear from what's happening. If only they'd decided to initially divert funds to MW5 instead of their first attempted trainwreck- at that point, they may actually have gotten a respectable amount of kickstarter'd funds from the denser whale population of the day.

Oh please. If asking what’s up with PGI lately has an “unconstructive bias” then so too does about half the threads presently up in the general discussions room and even more in the faction play area.
