My quick thoughts are: Up the engine to a XL 255, same weight as the 250 so no reason not to do it. 4xMGs plus a LPL or PPC is otherwise the go to build for the 5K.

I'm a proponent of using HMG&Flamers on my MG mechs. But you're going to have to make some sacrifices in the armor and JJ to make room for extra ammo though.
Don't worry--if the enemy is shut down, it doesn't matter quite as much if you are a little bit lower on armor and run a little slower.

I'll second what Shadey99 said about the engine, no reason not to squeak out a little extra speed. Personally, I'd recommend a LPL instead of the SN-PPC. In a mech that small and lightly armored you really don't want to stop moving to take shots at people and it can be difficult to land PPC shots when bumping around at high speeds. The LPL would give you some aiming leeway (and reduce the temptation to stop moving to land a PPC shot) along with some extra range.

Of course, you could also go with a LL or ERLL and gain significantly more range and bump up the MG ammo or engine size. No matter what you do, the 5K is a tough mech to work with, but that doesn't mean you should give up on it. Tough mechs to work with can sometimes be the most fun. Good luck, and happy hunting!

Here's a build that works with ERLL as the centerpiece. I added MGs instead of LMGs simply for the extra damage since the 5K can only hold one energy weapon, but that also allows you to get away with standard heat sinks.

I have endo and dhs along with xl255
Personally I love the SNPPC and do my best snap shooting while moving, and I prefer regular MG’s because the spider has enough speed to get in close. Even paired with an ERLL works, and you could throw in another heat sink or a TC1 for giggles.

1 LPL
4 LMG

This thing has earned it's nickname of "Killstealer" in my mech garage. I can't count the number of games I've had 3 or more kills and less than 200 damage....

It is a good build. There is a video where Baradul a.k.a. Molten Metal on Youtube plays that build. Worth a watch.

I often run a snub nose ppc on my 5V. It takes patience and a ton of practice to hit on the run. I'm not the best pilot and i'd be lying if I said I don't miss a lot of shots. If you have to stop to be able to hit a target with any ppc then don't wield it. If you completely stop in a Spider, you lose a component at the very least. There are some VERY good shots out there.

I run snub on my 5V. You really have to get used to aiming fly by shots on stationary targets. Difficulty is much higher on moving targets. Worth it if you're looking for a challenge xD

LPL is more practical. Shorter cooldown and lower base heat. Duration is short enough.

Edit: Lee H4vey beat me to it ;o
