ps. As much as I'd like a engine switch announcement, I think that would be an unrealistic expectation. It won't bring people back to MWO that left because of butthurticus and might actually cause more to leave. If they DO do a engine switch, the best time to announce it would be the day before closed beta goes live.
I'd go further and say thay can't make a "closed beta" or anything of the sort for an engine switch.
The only way to successfully switch the engine with the player base intact is to do a full port + the improvements that allows and basically transfer everyones accounts with all their stuff fully retained to the new client without any downtime.
IS that realistic? No idea. But people who have grinded and payed a lot in MWO will absolutely not start from scratch in a new "MWO2", there won't be enough old players prepared to do that and not enough new players to base a new game on.
One thing PGI has been fairly good about though is that they are actually pretty generous towards their customers/players in terms of reimbursements, free stuff and so on. So I'm pretty confident that an engine switch would come with full retainment of user accounts and assets, there's just too much money poured into them.
What could potentially go wrong IMO is if the new client is released feature incomplete and without all the content ported at launch, which would essentially mean a downgrade from MWO in terms of features and content to begin with.
All in all it's a pretty sensitive operation to perform, It's also necessary if MWO is to have a future since the client is so outdated now, but yeah a lot could go wrong.
