Basically, three players will be able to drop into your single player missions and replace AI lance mates.

total fkn standard WIN, i was under the assumption this would be strictly a single player only with no support ever for multiple humans

In fact russ only said that it's gonna be 4-pl coop. And that's all.
But putting previous things together I think it's gonna be like mw4 was, where you could control up to 4 mechs. In mw5 you will be able to play single with 3 bots, 2 players with 2 bots, e.t.c

MW4 didn't let you control multiple mechs. You could give orders to your lancemates like "attack my target" or move to the navpoint, but that's not really "control" (especially because the AI really sucked at following those orders).
