also, you're not allowed to pick a mech after the map for precisely that reason. you have to learn to adapt what you have and how you pilot, and how you work with your team to any situation. You go into a match with the equipment you have. no build is perfect for every map. key is just figuring out how to make up for those shortcomings with your own piloting skill. for instance, if you're on a hot map in an energy-heavy mech? learn proper fire discipline and take time to line up your shots, and back off to cool down, or set chainfire on so your heat sinks can manage easier.
I get your point but I still don't think its good play, not to mention completely unrealistic. No combat unit drops into a random environment. People wouldn't hate lurms and the polar map so much if they could respond to it. I would even actually use my NARC Raven and my AMS KFX a lot more. I think that you would also drive more sales to ballistics mechs if the player knew that he could swap out his laser vomit build for a Rifleman or Blackjack if given the opportunity. You can and will still learn heat management in your MPL CRB-27B build on even a cool map. Shoehorning players into rigid conditions isn't good for play nor business.

also, for the guy whining about the RACs needing to be nerfed? it's called moving. RACs don't track well, and will do a lot less damage if the pilot is forced to do so. it's when someone is standing in front of it like an idiot and tries to tank it that you get ripped to pieces. frankly... now you know how IS pilots felt when we ran into the KDK-3 Quad-UAC/10 build pre-UAC nerf. stop whining and adapt. this is Mechwarrior Online, not Turretwarrior. move and shoot, use cover, lock and pick out weakened armor sections and opened crits. basics every MechWarrior should know.
RAC blinding cockpits far too easily needs fixed, IMO.

No combat units gets to veto the areas they don't like for every single engagement, either. It's nice when your side chooses the engagement zone, but it doesn't always happen.

Fox, again, move. that screws RACs up. you'd only get blinded by it if you're standing there getting shredded by it. there's plenty of other weapons that can blind you when you're shot in the face too. mean, hell, LRMs, MRMs, Lasers.... honestly, EVERY weapon in the game can blind you if you're getting shot in the face. you're just noticing it more with RACs due to high RoF. Clan UACs've been doing the same thing for years. adapt.

Solaris City Map - The attention to detail on this map is awesome. Can't wait to play it! Props to everyone involved in creating this
Solaris Game Mode - Duncan Fisher! (Any similarities to persons living or dead is ridiculous.) Hard to beat. Unless... Cave Johnson?

My advice for the next Mech Con:
1. Fill in all that downtime. Competitions, trivia quizzes, giveaways, interviews with players, personalities, staff, ads for products, player created videos. Take us on a tour around the various vendor displays.
2. Remove maps from rotation once used. Real WC Mechwarriors should be able to win on any map.
3. Give the commentators a raise. They did a great job.
4. Faction Play. Not mentioned once. Needs work - but please don't abandon it.
5. Add a Cosplay contest open to attendees.
6. Add a modeler contest open to attendees, judged by the attendees. Ie. painted BT figurines.
7. Add a 'best Mech illustration' contest open to the public, judged by PGI's art team.
absolutely this!
Btw: modding only for mw5 or mwo, too?

“What about imposing a map rotation on the next championship?”
I will pass this along to the Tournament Planners.
“Please present the players and teams fighting in the finals on stage.”
We tried to do more of that this year! Will definitely fix for next year.
“You really need to do more for the stream in the 'downtime'”
I agree! But Wow, it is hard! Even the Audio and Video Guys need Food Breaks and Bathroom breaks! I do have some ideas for next year to improve this… Already in the planning phase.
More to come....
For Mechcon 2018 yes there should be more variety in maps for the finals...maybe even random map selection but allow each team to veto 2 maps each for the maps in the rotation (I know there are also some concerns about spawn in points on certain maps giving one side more of an advantage than the other, all I can think of here is either play 2 games on each map before the next map and flip spawns or maybe you custom spawn in points just for the tournament...the only other solution I can think of is create symmetrical maps just for the tournament..which could then be added to the ques after for regular play).
There should be more airtime and focus given no only to the finalists but also to the VIPS (the guys the community raised money to have in attendance...all you gave them was 10-30 sec spots, some barely spoke a word) if you need something to fill the down time talking to these folks would be a great way to do it!
As for the "do more in downtime" all I can say is USE YOUR VIP TWITCH STREAMERS! I hate to say it like this but after the community raised money to have all these fantastic personalities in attendance and seeing how the day went I have to ask..."why"? I mean I know why but why not use them to run the twitch stream because its what they do all the time, every day and if you are going to ask us to raise money to have our favourite personalities there then let them entertain us so PGI staff can focus on the event...its a win, win (we get to see our favourites in action and feel like we raised money for them to be there for a purpose, PGI can focus on the event and the downtime that was about as long as the uptime fades away)
As for other ideas:
Have mechcon promo items/merch for sale on the website for everyone...a great way to raise money for the even to make it even better (sure maybe keep a few exclusives for attendees)
You had an awesome guy in attendance who specializes in creating music for Battletech, why not ask him to do the music for Mechcon?
A cosplay segment would be great, but what about also adding a mech build/model creation segment for attendees too (similar to the types of things people did for halloween...or in smaller scale)
Give a little more focus/attention to HBS/battletech, BT tabletop/catalist (maybe have "grudge matches" between PGI staff or some of the VIPs much like the Mitch and Jordan segment) and of course the biggest/best VIP 9in my opinion anyhow) "Duncan Fisher"/George
Mechcon is really a fantastic event and there is more than enough that could be done not only to fill the dead air but also to fill an entire weekend. As a viewer of both Mechcon 2017 and Mechcon 2016 (as well as the Twitch Launch party in 2015, which I still think was the most entertaining of the 3 to watch) I can honestly say that the excitement really hasn't come through as much on stream as it has for people who actually were there. Looking forward to Mechcon 2018!

Bandit and I actually tried to get the DJ to play some Animattronic stuff. I think he actually played one song, but that was it, and then the DJ switched halfway through the event and someone else was doing it?

False.
Lights, mediums, and heavies are fine if they are moving.
Assaults (I'm working on mastering my Nightstars, so "play a faster mech" won't work) don't move fast enough to get their cockpit out of the explosion effect radius. I can torso twist away the damage, but I can't target the mech effectively.
I'm fine with screen shake making it so I can't pinpoint locations on the mech. I'm not fine with the explosion decals keeping me from seeing exactly where the enemy mech is to begin with.

This is the only thread I have any real interest on currently, as a straightforward answer, to my straight forward question determines whether I go potentially back to a spending whale, or possibly abandon the game all together.
If it's not answered, I shall have to assume that means it's an answer I won't like, though if the game does go everything Solaris, that will also have a bearing on my choice in the next month or so.

Yet the players that are in these finals should be the ones most able to adapt to the random map system, yet they're the most mollycoddled of the entire community.
As to realism, wars are not fought by 8v8 teams. Air superiority is all important, or there would be no intelligence, for attackers, if they didn't have it, and there would be no invasion. (D-day happened because the allies had it, Dieppe failed because of it's lack of it and intelligence, though the people that had been planning the invasion of Europe since, early 1941, knew it wasn't the right time or target.).
If the defenders didn't have it, their satelite system would be destroyed limiting intelligence, mobility, and the ability to pick the ground the battles happen on.
Then we get into the grounds of load outs, even in 3060 are the social elite, they enjoy a better quality of mech than 40 years earlier, but they still would have just the one, unless extremely rich, where they might have two or three, and the comanding officers would chose the load out, based on intelligence, and their ability, or lack of it, not the pilots.
Planets unless extreme biodomes would have all conditions, and seasons.
So it is far more 'realistic' to limit peoples choices, than to allow a free hand.
As to E-sports which I don't have the slightest interest in.
For them to become big, it is far more enjoyable to watch games played on a wider variety of maps, so that they don't see the same couple of maps played on and seeing generally the same tactics used with a limited variation..played over and over, but see how each team deals with the changing conditions.
This goes further into standard play, with random maps and modes stopping the game from becoming stale.
Which ever system is used, people will still hate Lurm's, and you won't see them in E-sport,
