I donno. I feel like hero mechs are cheating when it comes to stock mode. I mean, I can probably rattle off a half dozen hero mechs with really solid stock loadouts.

True, heros are retrofited to begin with.

The Royal Crab 27B is also kind of OK, with 2xERLL+ML+SL and luxurious 16 DHS in tabletop stock form.

Quite a few hero designs are actually directly from tabletop game.

The nova was great as is when it was first released. Also the timberwolf. The centurion A and AL were good back in beta days.

Yah but a lot are PGI originals. Natasha Kerensky ran a stock Warhammer, so the Black Widow is not from TT. Same with Grey Death and Pirates Bane, Grayson Carlyle and Lori Kalmar-Carlyle ran stock Shadow Hawk and Locust machines. Ditto for the Tempest, as Morgan Kell also ran stock. Katana Kat was a typical Panther, just like Grinner was a typical Wolfhound (until rebuilt with clan tech). Aiden Pryde used a Summoner with a Prime loadout the majority of the time, so the Summoner hero is off. Honestly it's hard to think of one that is actually pulled from TT without modification, maybe the Enforcer hero? Granted, to be worth buying and to be effective these mechs needed to be changed, but most iconic mechwarriors used typical machines in BT.
edit-well except for Yen-lo Wang, that mech is pretty much pulled stock from BT/TT.

I've recommended that mech to a few people as their first purchase and it hasn't disappointed any of them.
It has a very easy to use laser vomit that can engage at most distances to some effect.
It doesn't have anything with ammo so it isn't carrying a table top load of very little ammo for a lot of weapons.
It doesn't have a ton of armor shaved off to fit weapons, only 6 armor in total is removed from it and over half of that is in the heavily armored legs.
It doesn't trigger any ghost heat.
Has a 43 point alpha and 12 DHS outside the engine giving it almost 4 DPS according to Smurfy.
Has END/FF and DHS already.

Considering most of the 'stock mechs' were ripped from tabletop, the 80s/90s are more to blame here than PGI.
But I forget myself; Logic has no place in the brown sea.

Mechs like the Hunchback 4P were golden children but they don't hold up well against mechs with DHS.
