Worked in tier 3. I get decent damage numbers in losses too (250 ish). I'm enjoying it.

Skills are almost max sensors (no seismic and a few behind the back sensors nodes missing), every velocity, range, heat, and laser duration node, some weapon cooldown nodes on the way (6.6%), max cool run and heat containment going for speed retention instead of gyro at the lower middle (don't have this part yet, but everything else yes).

For the best Puma sniping I'd recommend getting the Adder Prime and keeping its 8/8 full pod set for the quirk bonuses (-5% ERPPC heat, +10% velocity, the Prime LT and RT each grant an additional -5% heat for -15% total, LA and RA each give +10% velocity for +30% total).

The trade-off is that you have to use lower mounted arms instead of the torso, but then again it's kinda nice being able to aim your PPCs up and down at UAVs or people far above/below you (plus having -15% heat and +30% velocity is very noice).

I just can't bring myself to give up the higher mounts. Such nice peeking over hills. Plus, I usually fire just at bigger targets who aren't moving much and I try not to fire too much. The UAV's deal would be nice though.

The high mounts are usually worth it over the quirks. The adder doesn't have armor to be wasting, so less exposure saves it.

I died a little inside when I saw the skill tree. Since you are running hot as balls CERPPCs, you should invest in Operations. Get all the Coolruns, and hill climb nodes help in peeking as well. When I build a sniper, usually improved zoom is enough for me from Sensor tree. I'd also strip an arm and get one more DHS in. Gotta maximize the DPS.

I like having armor. DPS is nice, but I take my time with shots so I couldn't really capitalize on it.

Armor and cool run aren't mutually exclusive. My person style for pretty much every single mech I use is:

>30-40 something firepower (depending on build), always max heat gen
>32 survival for max armor/structure
>17 or so operations for max cool run
>Anything left goes to more firepower

I like to be the Energizer Bunny. Keep going and going both offensively and defensively.

I'm not a great pilot (partially because I don't feel like having a frenzied and frantic game if I can avoid it). So if I get caught I'm dead armor or not. However, I put points into armor tonnage because return fire is a thing.

I let range and cover be my armor. I did put most of the available armor on as well. I figured I'd like to have the best sniping that the skill tree will afford me and as mentioned in response to the above quote, if I get caught I'm usually dead. So I try not to get caught (sensors).

Of course that means on bigger open maps (like tourmaline) I have to be careful about gauss snipers by not exposing enough for them to have a good chance at hitting (and I need to move between shots). If I'm particularly paranoid I can back up, wait 3 seconds, then move in case of target decay spotters.

A little worse on the armor, better on the mounts, and ECM. I'd ditch a 2 of the extra cooldown nodes (there are some right in the center near the top middle) for both ecm improvement nodes. 15% heat dissipation instead of 10%. I lose the 2% extra energy cooldown, but that's hardly noticeable for me. There's also the 30% cbill boost too. One less heat sink hurts in exchange for the ECM, but I haven't taken heat containment yet on my current mech and with the extra heat dissipation and the cooldown/heat containment nodes I should be able to still fire 2 double shots on the hottest maps before needing to cool down.

Slightly taller if I'm looking at it right, but less width. Being shorter is better, but the mounts kind of make up for it as well as the ECM.

Of course, the mech costs mc (2815 of it, and when it was on sale it would have costed... 1689 (which I could have afforded, but I bought the k9 because it has sirens and I didn't know that I liked ppcs back then)).

For the most part it would be an improvement (though less durability does worry me a little), but I can work with what I've got now anyways.

Though, the adder in the pic is slightly turned away from front view, so it's a little different, but it's noticeable enough on the arms.

Altogether, the higher mounts are almost not worth it since the ones on the adder are close enough to head level that the difference isn't usually much (since I still have to expose up to my glass window to fire). The extra heat dissipation is offset by the loss of a heatsink. The mechs are similar in height and I don't do left right flanking. The deal here is the ECM. That's extremely nice against gauss snipers. 30% cbills are nice, but I don't usually care.

It's a tough decision between extra armor for more sustain without needing skill points and ECM against gauss snipers, but given the two options, extra armor is useful in more situations than ECM I think (for me anyways). I could be wrong though. Because gauss snipers will shoot anyways and not every map is big, but you will almost always be taking damage in a game.

EDIT: Sort of changed my opinion in a single post :X

I can think of one map where higher mounts might come into play for me even with sensitivity: Tourmaline Desert because of the weird way the ridges work, but that would only be close range flanking over the ridges which is risky and with less armor not as great of an idea (and ECM would likely not work at those ranges).

Current decision: Stay with adder. I already have it, and the way things work indicates that spending MC on the purifier wouldn't improve things sufficiently to justify use of that resource.

the sniping adder is indeed a lot fun, and I also use the ST mounts they are a way better choice than the arms in my opinion because you can nicely ninjahillpeek with them.

@Gooddragon the extra exposure surely is a lot for the arms, vs ST Mounts

just quick and cheap paint cutout.

In higher tiers ecm doesn't helps much, people shot on sight anways, especially at those long ranges people don't lock you if you are sniping due to the raneg alone. Second, the amount of shopts at me which just missed my by a hair would otherwise have hit me. if you have competent players at the other and that additonal expoure (and time fo exposure to get up showing the arms and retreating your entire mech) is just making a big difference. In fact the kfx having JJ's reaching some nice spots would be more of a benefit than the ecm.

in the end the heat does make the difference in dps. At both low weights those few additional DHS are still making it.

Just...unlike a trueborn Clanner... hiding behind hills to shoot their prey.
A real Clanner would go balls to the wall taking on an Atlas with just two ER ML and no skill tree.

Yep, the heat and armor make the difference for me. Jump jets are very nice for positioning on some maps, but I don't remember to use them in combat and I'm not that focused on positioning in that way. Too complicated. I usually end up doing closer range flanking towards the end if things are going well and I can get away with it (depends).

I have my Adder Prime almost stock. I love it.

Honestly the Adder is agile enough and its arm mounts are high enough that it doesn't really suffer from the knuckle-dragger syndrome that a lot of 'mechs with arm mounted weapons do. And I get the full set of quirks since I'm not mixing omnipods.

If you do get the Purifier then there is a better way to build it. Check the quirks on the STs and then put both the PPCs in one side torso while using the quirks in the other. Use a jump jet leg also so you can jump snipe and get to otherwise inaccessible places. Although you can get better cooling without the jump jet if that is more of a concern for you.

All I can say, is I warned my SaKhan, that the invasion was a bad idea, that in the long run the Clans would lose... At least once my Khan was removed and my SaKhan was put into a coma, we got new leadership that turned us around and followed what my report suggested integration with a faction of the Sphere.... though that vindication came after they had declared me dezgra, stripped me of my command and booted me from the clan...
