It's the year of the dog, ah don't see the connection between the wang and a dog. Maybe I'm thinking to deep about it.

Thunderbolt have the Top Dog hero, kit fox is related to the dog as the wolf but unless you want to go into technicalities.

Wolverines are weasels, treb is treb he a cool guy.

So anything that related to canines or refernces of canines count.

Well for starters, AFAIK the lunar new year is not a holiday in Japan. It's definitely 100% a major Chinese thing. So a 'mech with a rising red sun on its chest is probably not the #1 Lunar New Year poster boy.

The Chinese lantern cockpit items, OTOH...

YLW's sunburst is not related to the Rising Sun, as the Rising Sun motif has no relation to or meaning in BattleTech.

Yen Lo Wang is indeed the King of Hell from Chinese folklore. As such it's indeed appropriate for a Lunar New Year sale event if the event is meant to commemorate the Lunar New Year. However the sale's theme is a dog or dogs or canines in general, and not Chinese culture or folklore in general. That's why the sale is focused on dog-related mechs and cockpit items like the pug cockpit standing, rather than a lantern.

Unless ofc that mech was named after the Chinese God (of the 9 Hells) by a fictional character of mixed Chinese / British heritage and its sunburst camo has nothing to do with Japan at all ... In such a scenario the YLW mech would be a poster boy provided that the sale was themed "all things that relate to China in one way or another. But since this sale is "dog"-themed YLW is just as non-fitting as ..

I think this fellow may be under the assumption that Lunar New Year is Chinese and the YLW is Chinese too, which is false.

Consider me educated.

I don't see the argument against the lanterns. I thought the lanterns showed up for LNY events (and weddings).

Edit: A follow up. I just asked my girlfriend, who is Chinese. She said: "Hell" is more like a prison, and Yen-Lo-Wang is like the warden of the prison. He's not exactly a god, but he is to the Chinese gods as an employee of the government is to a politician.

I showed her the paint scheme and she said it was actually pretty spot on. She couldn't clearly explain to me where the paint scheme comes from, but she said "if you showed me that and asked me what it reminds me of, it's pretty close," [to the hell / warden theme, I guess]

I am now culturally enriched.

Well to be pedantic, YLW is a deity, as in Chinese folklore they are not gods in the western world's sense ie almighty and omniscient. Your wife is absolutely right that in Chinese folklore, the hierarchy is structured like the Chinese imperial government, and the various deities are holding posts or jobs, and everyone holds positions in various levels of courts, the higher the court the more prestigious your post is. The chief honcho is the Jade Emperor (as the name implies), so it's similar to the imperial structure, however the Jade Emperor is not the top dog, as there are outliers that hold more authority, and are seen as true gods (remember previously those guys are deities), eg Buddha and Goddess of Mercy who feature as separate individual beings of power. The deities see them and acknowledge them as actual Gods.

Everyone knows the Monkey King of Journey to the West mythology yes? His "power level" is equal to the deities, but not to the level of the Chinese Gods.

What I wrote, King of Hell, is more a transliteration of YLW. Others apply eg King of Death, God of Death, even King of Yan (the 1st word aka Yen). Wang literally means King in the Chinese language.

Treb hero is the Loup de Guere, which (I believe) translates from French as "Wolf of War".

Yen-Lo-Wang or King Yen-Lo is the Buddhist Yama, which may have originated from the Yama of the Hindu Vedas, but has different myths and characteristics. Also known as King Enma in Japan, or Enma-oh, or Yenma-oh.

He's the character that Chief of Staff Hoizuki attends to.

I won't gift something related to death or hell for the start of the Chinese New Year. Should do something more related to prosperity. Like issuing gold camouflage or events that gives lot of credits.

No.

Violently beating several Wangs in a day is too much work, and not fun after the 2nd one...
