If your network is going out enough that you have any significant penalties, you probably need to stop playing until it is reasonably stable.

Why should PGI have a solution to someone else's connectivity issues?
As I said above the system is not meant to punish people who are disconnected against their will. It was meant to punish people who disconnect intentionally, which used to be a huge problem.

It was also designed to keep people who couldn't stay connected to the servers from causing the same grief. Like I said above, if you can't stay connected to such a degree that you are getting significant penalties, you need to quit until you work it out.

I'm not convinced that PGI had that in mind when they designed the system but I do agree that if you are dropping connection that often you need to play something else until you get it fixed.

There is a reason the penalties are exponential. If you can't see that at this point I don't know what to say. If you crash or lose connection a few times a night, there isn't a problem. If you crash or lose connection enough that penalties are an issue, there is a problem and isn't with the system.

Because a bunch of people whined and cried incessantly and loudly enough PGI eventually got weak-kneed and acquiesced just to shut them up. That's is why.
How else does anything get done around here? <shrugs>

Nope. See above for the real reason.

they do work though. if your internet is unreliable enough that you're regularly racking up large penalties because of it, then you probably shouldn't be playing a game like MWO.
the crashing and general instability is something that needs to be addressed, but that isn't an issue with the penalty system, it's an issue with the game itself. i don't personally crash often enough for it to be a huge problem, but it still happens far more frequently than it should.
i'm just not sure what the magic solution is that people are expecting. even if the game could somehow discern connectivity issues and crashes from intentional disconnects, the negative impact it has on a match is the same either way.

So what you are saying is that waiting the six seconds you had to wait for bailing once, for whatever reason, is entirely too much?

My internet is not always reliable but it is pretty good. I have been in games where the majority of players got AFK'D. My team got back in the game earlier so we won. Stuff happens.

Man with the way you were talking I thought you were getting into the minutes long penalties. It compounds in severity with each subsequent disconnect. I forget what the maximum penalty is but you get penalized much more harshly for a teamkill than you do for one single disconnect.
