The Thanatos has all the same problems as the Nightstar, but simultaneously instead of picking from a list. It has worse hitboxes, a worse cockpit, has terrible hardpoints (both type and location), and can't carry any respectable payload without losing a ton of speed and/or survivability. It's literally the only mech I've ever bought where I just couldn't bring myself to master even one, because a game or two was all it took to leave me so frustrated I'd log off for the night.
The Nightstar is slow and has bad hitboxes, on top of kind of anemic hardpoints, but it never made me feel like I would be better off just logging out and not ******* bothering.

You just basically explained issues with nearly every IS mech..
And Uziel makes me cry every time i try it, its sat in my mech list empty...

I've had the opposite experience. The Thanatos doesn't seem to get picked apart like the Nightstar, but maybe that is just because I can stay mobile. I haven't really had an issue with hardpoints. One of them runs 2 PPCs and 2 UAC5s, the other has 4 MLs and MRM50. I like both, but they could use a little bit of help so I am glad they are getting looked at.
I'm also surprised the Nightstar is not...

To be short, PGI. Convert ALL structure quirks avaiable on mechs that have them now, both IS and Clan to armor quirks. THEN add structure quirks thereafter. Structure quirks should be half the amount of armor quirks added. Unless theres some specified role/ reason for the mech to have them.
Like the Hunchbacks right torso. While the Atlas and hopefully Dire Wolf should have like 20- 30 points of armor all over the place, baked in -5% crit dmg recieved and 10-15 points of structure there on. Also increasd baked in torso twist speed and turning rate.
The Nightstar need armor all over i think also structure. But the main components are the torsos and arms.
Good to know the torso twist speed nodes get a usefulness bump at least, nice start. But assaults need a bit more. Either more mobility quirks or much more armor. Can do both but avoid overkill.

I don't know what to say. I can't think of an assault that I can perform consistently worse in. It surprises me too because I really wanted to like it at the beginning.

Some mechs just seem to work for some and for others no. The Thanatos that many say sucks (it's ok for me) you like. Personel performance isn't the end all be all.

I don't know about you, but I can't see the walk animation from inside the cockpit, so it's literally never bothered me.

It actually bothers me a lot. The animation is ******* terrible. Same with the King Crab.
