I'm a new player who would like to get some premium time and a couple mechs to earn credits with.

Are there any great mechs from these packages that you veterans would recommend?

Medium mech pack 2

Also, how deep do these discounts go around here? Would it be better to buy premium currency at a discount and buy the things I want directly from PG? Should I buy at 40% off from steam or wait for a better deal?

Medium mech pack two and heavy pack one are the two i'd recommend. They each have solid and diverse mechs.

Also The Crab mech is my Spirit Mecha Animal and is very noob friendly.

Heavy Mech Pack 2 would be the best to start with imo.

For newbies i'd recommend:

Medium pack 1:
HBK is a great starter mech (even if it is the 4P laser boat) and the stormcrow is your general purpose clan medium with decent mobility.

Heavy pack 1:
TDR is a tanky IS mech with good mobility and the TBR while mobility kinda sucks, it's your general purpose clan heavy that's a decent one to start with before you start diving into the Ebon Jaguars that require a bit more finesse.

Once you get the hang of things i'd recommend Heavy pack 2.

For new guys i'd say stay away from Lights and Assaults until you get the hang of the faster, lighter mediums and fatter end of the heavies. Also, these lights and assaults aren't that great of choices other than the Arctic Cheetah.

best pack for a beginner is IMO the heavy1:

the timber is a great mech; as you get better you'll see there are still better mechs, but the biggest thing for beginners:
you can do -anything- with that mech, thx to omni-tech.
so great for learning every (clan)weapon there is.
it's also way better on the battlefield than most people say; it's not godlike, but good.
also it looks damn sexy Posted Image

thunderbolt is great. and it comes with a near perfect loadout imho. changed mine here and there to better fit the way I like it, but basically that's the build I still run.
you'll learn a lot from running a tbolt, like positioning and torso-twisting.
I enjoy each run I do in my tbolt from day1, and that's more than I can say for any mech but my urbies.

to answer that "best value" bit
- if you really DON'T want 1 of those, maybe you're better off buying single heroes.
- if otoh you plan to get those 2 heroes anyway, the steam-package is the best value you can get - including mc-sales and hero-sales combined (thx to the mc and premium time).
go and have fun either way Posted Image

Heavy pack 2 has the best picks. Ebon Jaguar is good. Grasshopper 5H is not the best variant you can buy but it is serviceable.

However. Keep in mind that no mechs from all those packs are actually great.
I'd also advise against buying any lights if you are new player. They are the most demanding to player's skill.

Firstly, if any of the mechs is available as a trial mech, try them out before you buy.

Let me tell you a bit about the mechs:

Raven RVN-3L - a solid light mech with ECM which will require a larger engine. Is usually played as a sniper with 2x ERLL.
Arctic Cheetah ACH-PRIME - one of the best clan lights. Usually run with lasers as a harasser.

Panther PNT-10K - having the primary gun (PPC) mounted in the arm is a liability as it is easily lost to enemy fire. Avoid unless you played it as a trial mech and really liked it.
Mist Lynx MLX-PRIME - most weapons are mounted in the arms, loosing one halves the weapon load. Usually run with lasers or MGs.

Hunchback HBK-4P - used to be better. Still a solid laser boat. Having most weapons in the right shoulder makes it easy to take out unless the pilot knows how to torso twist.
Stormcrow SCR-PRIME - often used as streak or srm boat in FP(scouting).

Crab CRB-27B - solid laser boat with unusual geometry. Quite tanky for its weight.
Shadow Cat SHC-PRIME - a fast medium (if using masc) which can use ECM to get around quick. Usually played as a sniper with gauss or 2xERLL or 2xLPL or as a brawler using erml and srm.

ThunderBolt TDR-9SE - solid mech. Can run 3xLPL and other laser builds. Quite usable in FP.
Timber Wolf TBR-C - solid mech. Tends to get focussed for being known as a strong chassis. Still very good. Builds include 4xERML, 2xERLL or 4xERML, 2xHLL for long range or SRM + erml for short range. Can also run gauss + erml. Does not show up in FP as often due to the weight (75t is hard to fit into a dropdeck when there are better, lighter choices like the EBJ or HBK). Still very capable in QP. Also very iconic for mechwarrior.

Grasshopper GHR-5H - laser boat which is often used in FP, although other variants of the chassis do that better.
Ebon Jaguar EBJ-PRIME - can run be run as dakka platform or as laser boat. Solid mech which good in FP. Has wide arms.

King Crab KGC-000B - slow, really slow ballistic boat with a good mix of loadouts. Large size makes it a high priority target.
Dire Wolf DWF-W - slow, really slow assault with a good mix of loadouts. Large size makes it a high priority target. Also a bit squishy.

Zeus ZEU-6T - I do not see many of them in quickplay and they tend to be rare in FP also. Cannot really say anything about this. If someone knows the reason they're not played often please enlighten us.
Warhawk WHK-C - used to be used for 4 ER-PPC builds (which the prime does better now), but still a solid choice.

Do note that the clan mechs in each pack are omnimechs, meaning they are able to change body parts through omni pods, changing the hardpoints for almost all locations to hardpoints from other variants (except the hero), e.g. you could change the right arm on the TBR-C from ballistic (TBR-C rightarm) to energy (e.g. TBR-PRIME right arm).

Do note that many of the IS mechs require upgrades like endo steel (not ferro - except in some cases) and a better engine (e.g. bigger or LFE (or XL w/lights)) to really get the most out of them.

TL;DR:
For a beginner, I'd recommend the ThunderBolt TDR-9SE/Timber Wolf TBR-C pack as it is very solid and the TBR can run most builds under the sun. Second up would be Crab CRB-27B/Shadow Cat SHC-PRIME.

For a more advanced player or someone interested in getting into FP, I'd recommend the Grasshopper GHR-5H/Ebon Jaguar EBJ-PRIME since both see a lot of use in FP. Second up would be Hunchback HBK-4P/Stormcrow SCR-PRIME since the crow is good for clan scouting and the HBK teaches you torso twisting.

For masochists I'd recommend the King Crab KGC-000B/Dire Wolf DWF-W - if getting left behind by your team, getting outmaneuvered by lights (and some mediums) and getting focussed by the whole enemy team sound like fun for you, this pack will show you a world of pain.

The highest the steam discounts have ever gotten is 45% and that was november 2016 when they were removing pack 1s from the steam store and replacing with pack 2s. At regular prices, buying for real money from the PGI web store is better value but when the steam discount sales happen you're better there unless there is a sale happening on the PGI webstore or in-game at the same exact time.

Also the steam store employs regional pricing (local currency) while the PGI webstore is US dollars...so you can get a further value boost there if you're currency is worth less (Canada, Australia, New Zealand for example). The steam packs are most useful for newer accounts where you haven't already got all the colors, and mech camo unlocks for those mech chassis, and for the cbill bonus mechs and premium time.

Light Pack 1 and Heavy Pack 2 are the best of the bunch, with Heavy Pack 2 a top-notch grab and value. Medium Pack 1 is also really good, but I'd put it slightly behind Light Pack 1 because the Hunchie has some limitations from being energy-only and the Stormcrow is occasionally frustrating because of the large engine eating into its damage potential. The Raven from Light Pack 1 is also somewhat underpowered in the current era, but it's still a really solid mech on the whole.

I picked up the medium and heavy pack 2 during past sales and have been happy with them.

Good hunting,
