Saw that some of the newer mechs are starting to come out (Osiris atm, Nightstar a little later). Thinking about coming back in a few days after I patch (oh so many patches...).

I figured I pop in to the forums and see what's what. Solaris 7 sounds interesting (will it even come close to matching the glory of MW4 Mercs Solaris?) and good to see new mechs still rolling off the assembly line. Game still seems to be kicking, which is good because my MechWarrior/Battletech itch needs scratching as I anxiously await Battletech's release.

So how's the meta, the balance, player base, and overall feel of the game I wonder?

Been here a year this month. Started with a team that left the game after the May Skill Tree/Civil War disaster and joined another team, that is all but gone from MWO (6 of 55 members playing)?

I read the forum now and only play events with MC.... I guess, MWO is doing OK and behaving as usual !?!

Likely about the same as when you last were here. Depending on when last you were here, there's a new map, some new weapons, some new mechs. And various minute adjustments to balance related things. But not really any new features. Gameplay is about the same, maybe a bit less sniping than there was a year ago? Close range is popular, but I wouldn't necessarily say that that means brawling is popular.

1) Laser vomit and if you have the weight Gauss/Vomit with a couple mechs on the IS side (cyclops and Anni mostly) running dual HGR to noticeable effect.

2) Balance is meh. See 4.

3) Holding at around 30K with long term trend line showing a slow decrease over the long term. Was sufficiently bad for a while that Russ stated he was considering a return to 8v8 but since the numbers have come back up since December there has been no further comment on that.

4) Fairly static if not boring. Lights are dominated by MG boats on the clan side and the Wolfhound on the IS. All other classes and modes dominated by the aforementioned laser vomit and gauss/vomit. Anything else is either an outlier or driven by quirks (things like Wolverine or IV-4 with MRM 30s). PGI has "balanced" (nerfed) something every month (except for November) since the skills tree dropped in May, and Paul says raising TTK is their primary goal atm, so expect more weapons nerfs in the future.

I haven't played hardly at all in the last two years, and it was so fun to have all the new toys to play with when I started up a week ago. The MRMs and ATMs are so much more fun than the SRMs and LRMs, I think. And now that MGs are actually effective, it brings new life to mechs that have too many ballistic slots and not enough tonnage to fill them.

I also am having fun playing all the new mechs, and I even get to play the mechs I got for free just by buying a package every now and then. It's going to take months to get all the new mechs, so it's almost like starting over. It almost seems like a whole new game, but so comfortably familiar at the same time. The best of both worlds.

I came back too after a long break. Like some have stated, machine gun boats are just plain stupid. Even without any damage to your mech, boated machine guns will kill you in quick order. As per typical, some lights still dont register damage especially when running fast. Sometimes they just stand right in front of you and take 3 full alphas and then run off like nothing happened. Others, one shot and they die. There is no consistency. You will always have the pay to win mechs that are crazy OP for months then will get nerfed to normalcy. Its basically the same game with more mechs and a few good addition to weapons. (for IS)

Sry for the late reply, life been throwing me curve balls of late. Thanks for all the replies. Sounds about what I expected, will know more once I actually update and can get stuck in. I am incredibly curious how its going to go.

Im having more fun and playing more than I did this time last year. Been playing since beta and play very much on and off but now is a pretty good time to play. I just run around like a headless potato though so your mileage may vary.

I just came back myself from a significant break and honestly I don't notice much difference one way or another. If you enjoyed the game before, you will likely enjoy it now, if you didn't then might as well just uninstall.

If you were playing around when PGI captured the client for the MWOWC 2017 tournament build, then almost nothing has changed. Trading is the dominant role, Clan laser vomit dominates trading, and we've got even more Clan Lights with MG spam competing against the WLF-2 with its MPLs.

Same 'Mechs that were strong 12 months ago are still strong now.
