So, last night. pug group i was with there were a number of players the just did not know where or how to shoot at generators and omega. i watched them just shoot at the box and not through the window facing the gun. and when asked to shoot omega they just shot at the gun.. after much verbal prodding and cat herding they eventually figured it out. but by that time they were too far damaged and were dispatched with haste.

Just asking for a short video that shows how to and where to shoot objectives.

ps. this was faction play.

Next thing you'll ask for instructions on how to open the gate because you often see people shooting the actual gates. Don't be ridiculous, having no idea how to play this game is all part of the experience that PGI wants new players to enjoy. I mean otherwise they'd have like.....actual tutorials and stuff

While you are at it, maybe show how to block the gen as well? I'm probably a little mentally slow, but the first time someone asked me to help block a gen in my first few matches, I had no clue what they meant ( I may or may not have tried to zone defend them like I was playing a drunken pickup up basketball game).

What really sucks is that I actually tried to figure out the gens on my own in the training grounds when I first started into FW, and while the boxes are there, the gens are not inside (same with Omega Gen). I was really confused until I went and found some FW videos online to watch to make sure I was on track.

see, thats what im getting at. you shouldn't have to "go find" anything. the resource should be there when you sign up to FW for the first time and its a mandatory 1 time watch. if you need a refresher then its IN GAME not in some obscure youtube channel.

If invasion was available as a map mode for training grounds, this would be less of a problem.

How about players just concentrate on killing stuff? That goal is obvious and useful in all game modes.

Loyalty is based on damage, money is based on damage. Even the most brainless slug can figure what do when no one is shooting back. No need for a video.

Noobs don't care about leadboard stat padding, so what is even the point bringing up objectives?

you're not wrong, but when said players are so "new" they can barely hit a moving target and have atlest the ability to hit a stationary target but dont know how to actually hit it... see where im going? If im solo dropping and lose the pug lotto i still want to pull a win. so objectives are the way to go. Plus, if i can wipe the gens and put some damage on Omega by wave 2 then that changes the strat for defense to where i want them rather than them being in control of the where and when.

To this point, and to the game that started this post, they were shooting the box... not the gen in the box.. the box. i had to herd the cast to the window and do the "see? shoot here"... followed by when told "shoot the omega... they shot the gun.. not the generator... the gun. flailing about..

Why would it matter because players trying out the mode are quite likely not having much chance againts any better players of which they will meet many due to no separation of groups and solo droppers?

No, we need a tutorial on how to shoot mechs and turrets instead of Gens.

Yeah, I see a lot of new players doing this, which tells me it's a problem. I think one way to solve this is to just have a little better explanation during the load. Show a mock up picture of the generator box with the generator window and generator inside highlighted and labeled. Then you have another picture showing the Omega gun with the generator location pointed out and labeled similarly.

Or, you could also start every match with a very brief mission explanation where the camera flies to the target location and the drop commander explains the objective. This might get annoying though.

Further you could work toward designing the generator and box so that it is more obvious where you need to shoot. For example highlighting the generator window with a bright yellow box and recoloring the generator itself to stand out more from the box would draw the players attention naturally to where he needs to shoot. You could even add arrows pointing toward the window.

And also how to open the gate.. I can't tell you how many times I've seen people embarrasing themselves by shooting the door, not the door gen.. it's ridiculous..

In fact, I think we need intruductory videos for every game mode.. people don't know how any of it works, other than skirmish.. And we've needed this for a long long time..

Here's a video that seems to show the mechanics... I haven't watched it all or listened to the audio but I clicked through it and it appears to show what you're talking about.

Now if only you could somehow get those new players onto the forums to find the link......

That is surprisingly on point and I would have found it helpful a month or two ago. I've watched a lot of the MWO "newbie" videos and never saw that one, doesn't look like many have since it only had 33 views when I clicked on it.

You know how in some games you get that preview of the objectives just before the match starts.
We could use that at the loading screen.
Kind of a 'mission briefing' moment before getting to the team screen and mech selection.

"Mechwarriors, your mission is to open the gates by taking down these generators"
<queue a little flyby with some arrows>
"Advance into the enemy base eliminating the turrets... "
<queue a walk through showing a few turrets popping up>
"...until you get to the generator bunkers for the defense shield on the cannon"
<queue a flyby to the cannon gens"
"Your target area is well protected, so make sure to shoot through the exposed gap to take them out."
<queue starwars death star trench run>
"Once these generators are destroyed you can disable the cannon by destroying the controls at the rear."
<queue a flyby to the back of the cannon and a big arrow pointing at it"
