It was slightly less convenient than just pasting in a new layer in Photoshop but it was very much a thing that existed, was done often and easily by any objective standards. Posted Image

Yes, but completely unnecessary for the layout of the tro picture. They share a similar plane and vanishing points as well. It's not a composite.

Pretty much.

It basically boils down to the original creators preferring the Dougram take on cockpits while using the Macross designs as a base for further machines. Dougram style requires large, prominent heads to place the cockpits inside of. Macross, on the other hand, goes with the standard chest cockpits and deanthropomorphising the overall frame. Put together, you have mechs which can only fit people inside the torso while doing their best to appear as if they housed them in the head.

You could have the cockpits be partly in the head so the pilot could look out. But in cases like the Spider, that basically requires the pilot be standing up to get his head inside the mech head, or at least sitting on something like a bicycle seat. And the Cyclops would just be plain uncomfortable.

And there'd be no way for the Hatchetman's detachable head to take the pilot with it (let alone a passenger) which actually became a plot point with Kai Allard-Liao during the Clan Invasion where he needed just that to survive Stackpoling his own mech.

the problem is when you have a normal sitting position (like in a car) you have some serious issues with those "full head ejection systems"

here is a MWO Wolfhound and a Hatchetman I found in the net. both with the same "heavy gear" cockpit style (that could be found in the torso of those gears) The WLF levels out at 13m this is the supposed size of the Atlas!!!!!
And when you consider Allard Stackpoling as lore - 15-16m for the Hatchetman is necessary for this head shape.
For both the cockpit window is useless for everything but to move into a parking space without trampling on techs with orange/yellow vests

oh ...the picture:

ok i just realized that we all use the ideal battleMech seat for several times a day.
The toilet-seat. The position is more compact compared to a bicycle or motor bike seat. Your ellbows can rest on your legs and the controls would be right in front of your knees.

A moderate human can be put in the space of 4x5x6 tiles (a tile is 18x18cm) the pedals would be similar to the motorbike be con tolled by the heel not the toes.

This would also not interfere with those old huge bulky neurohelmets

I actually considered a 'crit slot' to be around 1.5meters height by 1 meter width by 1 meter depth based on the minimum size of a comfy chair. If train tracks are based on the size of horse butts, why not have a mech's standard unit be based on a man's? Posted Image

There is nothing saying that the full head ejection system stops at the neck, the pod can protrude into the torso

A full head ejection system also doesn't have to contain all the head crits, just 1, the crit containing the cockpit, along with the minimum attached structure, armor, and 'glass' to fully escape the mech.

^ just in my mind

Those designs are god damn delicious.

So weird to see minis that are actually in-scale of one another though.

The difference is in pride for their craft.... dammit those look good. Will do a scale test when I get home.

you have my support 100% for scaling down mid - assault based on the light scale and real volumetric scaling. prefereably with the locust as the going test bed.

By definition, scaling means that scaling small mechs up or large mechs down is the same thing... because either way they would be the correct scale.

But yes, the scaling needs to be across to all classes, not just assaults and lights.

And PGI should to go the extra mile and calculate the actual volume of the mechs, not just the largest XYZ dimensions.
As Kiiyor said above, the shape of the mech's volume should be taken into account.

Promised comparison, I picked the mechs randomly since I can't fit all combinations

Verdict?

The scale looks great to me.
Better than MWO for sure.

Different manufacturers maybe? Can't fault them if they're using a different baseline, but if the same designer, then it'd be a case of not giving a damn
