On a light mech, like the Spider, with no ammo on board, it is a no brainer. Yes, if someone blows off the side torso, the engine is scrap, but if you get your torso blown off, chances are pretty good you are screwed anyhow. And if you can vastly increase it's speed, and /or upgrade the armor, it would offset the "vulnerability".
On an Awesome, you better believe I would go XL, cuz I will be packing a 400 into that thing, and having my max armored 80 PPC monster coming at ya at 85 kph.
But on something like the Jagermech, with light armor and tons of ammo, or even the Hunchback where you're gonna be in the thick of it, I might not.

i know everyone likes to go the attack route and put lasers or ppc's on, but an xl engine will free up some tonnage for ammunition

they weigh less but you die when any of your torso-parts breaks instead of just the center torso?
