I'm going to note that it's telling of the remaining playerbase that the Best Loss thread is more filled with screenshots (that could only display individual performance) than with tales of exciting matches fought tooth and nail till the last mech where every teammate contributed in some way.

Best loss was back in the day in 3/3/3/3 we had tight comms and were against some decent players on Tourmaline. I had lance command of group of solid lights who, along with the Drop Commander had a solid setup for a hard flank on a long wrap-around play.

Unfortunately one of our assaults wasn't paying attention to the plan and started walking into the enemy firing line causing everyone to push up with him before anything was set, he went down obviously but the rest of the team was holding their own and it was 1 - 2 their favor when the lights crashed into the rear of their main line.

Battle raged, light lance ate an atlas then a dragon, things looked well until someone said "why don't they have any mediums"?

...because their medium lance was the ones who flanked and as we were headed towards even they showed up out of nowhere putting the remains of our assault lance in a pincer and causing the expected level of chaos in our ranks (while willing to follow commands, it's still a group of random players).

DC made the call to press into the mediums and overrun them, which was the call i would have made since the mediums were closer to a cover they could then use to fight back from- unfortunately many of our players flat out turned their back to the remaining enemy heavies/assaults instead of moving at an angle and got vaporized.

The main force cleaned out all the mediums but took extreme losses and was down to 1 highlander that was beaten up. Enemy forces had their entire light lance and a mix of heavies an assaults it was about 6 to 8 their favor.

Our light lance had lost one pilot, but was still function if beaten up as well and in one of the most surprising moments of MWO play our DC called one simple command- "scatter".

Given that the remainder of our pilots far outpaced theirs we scattered and made the rally point he called next.

Funny story, when we scattered- they scattered too, but chasing us separately. Our Blackjack didn't make it (but blew off an enemy leg on his way out) but we were now a full, fast lance against 6 badly damaged and spread enemies. At this point score is 6 to 9 their favor.

Our surviving lights counter rotated and picked off their mechs one by one given they were too spread to support each other or too legged to move quickly. Suddenly the score was 7 to 9, 8 to 9, 8 to 10, then 10 to 11.

I got popped by an ac20 jager who happened to catch my leg then my face and so the last guy was up against an awesome and a cataphract who had obviously used all his ballistic ammo.

Back in these days the movement system hadn't been nerfed and Jenners could legitimately fly, watching this dude dance, bob, and weave while he took shots at the cataphract was a sheer joy. Was like watching one of those movies where a tiny kung-fu master runs circles around the giant boxer trope.

Anyway, he managed to cut off the cataphracts torso and XL leaving us at 11 v 11, with everyone on the edge of our seats...

...and promptly proceeded to do a flying hop in an unlucky direction, catch terrain and completely stop motion, then catch a full volley of PPC to the face.

RIP.

We lost, but not only did we have a great match, even spectating was an enjoyable experience.

Used to be a reasonably regular experience around these parts...

my best loss was back when no one cared about PSR, match score or tier systems

I think it was around 2014, 2015 and before in game voip, I was still new to the game

I had bought a Huginn and on forest colony I got into a 1v1 with a Mist Lynx

I was pad-locked on this mist lynx and on his six o-clock
I chased him up and around hills, when I would get close he would do a fast pull up immelman maneuver
and I would lose sight of him (I needed a bubble canopy on my Raven)

I would then pop the speed breaks (ok I did not have speed breaks) get back on his tail
Mechs stopped to watch the engagement ( i remember looking to the side to see a mech watching when he could have shot me)

anyways after the 3rd trip around the hill he did one of his classic "Duke" Cunningham maneuvers and he got me (or maybe one of his buddies shot me)

anyways a great fight with people typing Classic in chat at the end

I was going to rage, but decided to cry instead knowing that there is no hope after all.

Well, this was one of my "best losses" on August 6th 2017...

Yes, escort... The much maligned game mode that everyone hated, until they got a game like this.

So there we were, defending the VIP with everything but our 2 lights that were out scouting and harrassing. I was the primary LRMboat, and the rest were all essentially brawler builds. We had very little decent ranged capabilities compared to the enemies. So we all just sort of sit there, and the enemies just stay at range sniping us, while I rain destruction on them with indirect fire using our scout's locks. They managed to get a scout (kitfox) to close to visual range with our VIP protection deathball, and everyone's framerates drop to below 10 as the lasers, missiles, and autocannons light this thing up. It was fantastic. Well, they got a decent look, saw we were mostly underwhelmingly equipped, and not that heavy on the tonnage, and decide to do an open-ground rush on us. I was the last to die, standing in front of the VIP delaying its death. (I also soaked the most damage that round)

Ah, the good old days when there were still lopsided tonnage issues with the QP matchmaker, but at least it didn't have groups.

Funny. Charlie Lance Flea. Worked really hard to pretend assault mech.

Like 150 dmg from strikes, but it still counts :)
