I like light mechs because they are small enough to use cover well and fast enough to get around. I like assault mechs because they hit hard. I just can't really like mediums or heavies though. The viper moves fast but it's big. Heavies don't hit hard enough for me. What's the appeal for mediums and heavies?

People like mediums and heavies for versatility, consistency, and overall ease of use.

I pretty much only play Lights at this point. I see little reason to play anything heavier, as I can do nearly any role imaginable in a Light.

I think you just haven't found the right 'mechs in the medium/heavy classes. There are plenty of builds you can run massive alpha's while still remaining relatively cool and have a huge bump in agility over assaults, effectively letting you handle a much wider array of situations.

Just as an example, the Ebon Jag can pull off 8 MPL's with a 56dmg burst that can be alpha'd with very little penalty and with just under a 3 second cooldown after skills. You can also hit a great medium range build at 59 alpha 5 ERMED / 2 LPL.

For mediums the Hunchback IIC has some great alpha potential for a medium, and you can pull off some fun poke builds as well that are also great in brawls. IS Hunchies are great as well, or used to be when I still played them. Right now if I play mediums I just poptart in a Blackjack 3 with 2 heavy ppc's.

Anyway, just experiment and you'll find that all weight classes have their niche and you can incorporate your playstyle into any of them.

The heavy class has a lot of really good mechs on both sides of the fence. The mediums are more hit or miss in comparison, although some play like tanky lights.

I love a good heavy 'mech match. You have enough firepower to really see some fireworks, but you have enough speed so you don't wind up with a turret match.

IS mediums are definitely lacking

they dont get the speed of lights or the weapons/armor of heavies

on top many of them having severe scaling issues

As do many Lights. It doesn't help that there exists a 65 ton Heavy that so far outstrips Mediums and 35 ton Lights at their own game that it basically renders them all irrelevant.

Some mediums play very light-style friendly, especially 40 tonners.

An Arctic Wolf[, Assassin,, Cicada or Viper feel very much like their little bros zipping around the field, but can squeeze in more damage capacity.

My favorites are Heavies, but I can't play them as much, because they sit around 40-50% in queue at all times, and that means longer waiting. Hate waiting.

Not a big fan of Lights, but I have most epic matches in those little guys. Also I believe I perform in Lights better than in other weight categories (honestly, they feel a bit on OP side, but that's subjective).

Absolutely love Assaults, but they are highly dependent on team composition, which can screw you up pretty hard in solo QP.

However, don't see role or purpose of Mediums at ALL. Half of them are undergunned and squishy Heavy wanna-be's, another half are slow, huge and sluggish Light wanna-be's. I play Mediums a lot, trying to learn it better, and I have some Meds that perform extremely well (Bushie and SHC), but overall they still not seem to have their legitimate place in this game. Maybe I'm missing something here though...

Mediums have suffered greatly from mobility nerfs.

E.g. Centurion, Shadowhawk and especially hunchback iic which was a formidable mech.

But with the firepower on the field these days, being mobile is life. Always was life. A lot of mediums died, when their mobility was significantly reduced after skill tree. And for some reason, no matter how much mobility you pump into mechs like the hunchback iic or the centurion or the shadowhawk.....theres heavies that are twice as agile as them, turning these former strong mediums into bad mechs. Bad choices.

There are some very good mediums though. I play the shadowcat a lot or the Uziel. Both are very strong as light hunters and/or skirmishers. Very agile, pretty lethal machines.

The Hunchback IIC is still an extremely strong mech. Yes, it handles like a garbage truck carrying a second garbage truck, but it has amazing hard points and is a clan battlemech.
